"I'm not a big Pantera fan either, but they have some very memorable and killer riffs"
yeah they have some memorable songs but the vast majority is just trash

Actually MO's position was the basis for some of his cointerpoints, basically stating that people were quitting metal because bands like Pantera and Metallica were putting out shit but people couldn't accept just how visceral and unique and emotionally charged bands like Slipknot and Disturbed were.
He had some decent points but he just disregarded everyone else's pov like it was dumb and meaningless. Would make my attempts at "discussion" earlier itt look like grade A diplomacy lol.
But yeah, metal and mainstream generally don't mix well these days. There's always exceptions though.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Pantera where they're a band that got me into metal, but their full albums are really weak with a couple being bad.

This might very well me #1 in both user and staff year end lists.

I think I was just too focused on the instrumentation here for a long time (because it's incredible) but man are there some good feels on this.
The last quarter of Charging, the slower-paced solo on Mountains, the middle of Pteropticon, the chorus of Pillars, the second half of Collapse, most of Recharging...
That's just the stuff that jumps out at me. That guitar that comes in at 5:03 and the riffs behind it on Collapse? All the feels.

Won't be for staff, they don't lean towards this kind of stuff much.

I'm not sure this has enough staff ratings to warrant a BNM spot, or at least they didn't rate it high enough.
And keep in mind this came out a couple days before the new Radiohead album came out by the time this got any real attention so more people were more focused on that.

New Moonsorrow album got BNM and this didn't, that really confuses me.
Jumalten Aika is amazing, probably still my AOTY over this but this is clearly more well received, and by a wider, larger audience.

BNM is more or less based on how high the staff ratings are
Only two staff, one of which is an emeritus (who I'm not 100% sure even counts) gave this a 4 and the rest are less than that.
That being said not sure how Moonsorrow got there, there's only 3 staff ratings and one of them is a 3.2

this is some ANM right here.
