Seriously, guys, at the end of the day, it's just an opinion. I don't find it all that interesting, that's all. There's loads of better music out there for me - I got 150+ 5-rated albums, and I haven't even rated all the shit I like yet.

See, I disagree about that. This is no summation, this was effectively Opeth's big foray into the proggier territory, which is what evokes that kind of indifference in me. Heritage grew on me big time, but bar the growls, I'd easily lump this album together with PC and Sorceress.

OK, to elaborate on my previous point, not only does Pika love Opeth usually, but he has 150+ 5-rated albums, which makes this 3/5 even more blasphemous. In addition he's making Pikachu look bad, which angers me.

It's true this stepped into new territory. They didn't have these proggy parts in this amount before. Before it was more like DM with proggy elements. It's here when the prog becomes more prominent.

Awesome album btw

This is them doing prog without it being super obnoxious, 70s prog cover band worship nonsense like later Opeth though

It's not like they hadn't explored these elements before though, I think Watershed threw bigger curve-balls as far as prog experimentation was concerned, this simply had longer prog parts than before. It's not like BWP, or even Still Life was full throttle death metal though. Deliverance maybe clouded the progression timeline a little idk.

Actually, Lucca, this is kind of 70s prog. I think the production somewhat camouflages it, and once you hear it, you can definitely recognize the similarities.

Lucca, would you say this is better than Lateralus/Aenima and why?

Watershed had Coil, which is like one of the best acoustic songs ever. I wouldn't say it threw many curveballs - it felt a lot more basic in structure than their previous releases. Lotus Eater rules hard too. Them blast beats with clean vocals... yum.

No, not better than Lateralus but that's because Lateralus is my second or third album of all time lol (it's between that and Ocean Machine for me).

I could see the 70s prog influence, I just meant it wasn't as obnoxiously distracting like later Opeth.

Ocean Machine is actually the only solo Devy album I heard and it's awesome! I am kind of scared of listening to his other stuff though. I did enjoy that Casualties of Cool album and I like City very much.

Devin is one of my favorites, but yeah when you release THAT much material, not all of them are going to be winners ahah. I would still say that the majority of his albums do rule, though. Ocean Machine and City are bae < 3

it took me years to get into the bombast of a lot of his material because that's not really my thing but he is surely my favorite guy in the world now

Is any of his stuff as good or near as good as Ocean Machine?

i don't personally think ocean machine is his best (although i adore it and can understand), but it's a common sentiment that it is. it's the only album of his that i immediately appreciated a lot.

Terria is amazing, Alien by Strapping Young Lad, I personally love his newest one Empath although some people aren't as in love with that as I am (its my AOTY for me so far)

I should check Devin's work, only heard City so far. It is kind of overwhelming when you see how much stuff the guy produces though. I think Ocean Machine would be first stop on that journey, when I eventually get there.

I've heard all SYL albums, Alien and City are definitely at the top. I guess I'll listen to Accelerated Evolution, Terria and Empath next. Thank you ~~~
