In Framing is the one I still remember the most years later because some of those lyrics are just remarkable: "bit off more than could chew and then swallowed it whole/ I choked on your temper when you felt alone" and the entire last verse I mean wow

"Pictures of you smiling in times when I just couldn’t be around"

yeah I hate seeing Introduction that low, but reading that also made me realize I could never rank these songs. Nothing deserves to be in the bottom 5 lol

btw i'm still a little irked by people thinking intro is one of the best songs on the album cuz its overarching structure is that fucking obvious "quiet quiet quiet then big loud cathartic moment" thing so you know where the fuck it's going from note one and theres a million other songs--many of which are album intros--with the exact same structure so it sounds a bit like another generic album opener but other than the overaching structure the song is a stroke of genius
imo dendron is like "in the water" on science fiction; it's so clearly head and shoulders above every other song on the album even though the rest of the album is all phenomenal songs

@dimsim honestly I just don't think that's really a valid critique, because a lot of what they did hear is pretty tried & true as well. The chord structures and overall flow of the album are not unique at all, but it's the execution, emotion, and delivery that makes everything stand out more. Intro wasn't as predictable as you say because it actually takes a long time to hit the big cathartic moment. They tease you a couple times before finally letting loose. And honestly...there are only so many ways to open an album. Nearly every way could be considered "generic" at this point. It works very well here.
Essay over.

imo taking a long time to get to the big cathartic moment is still pretty generic; i've heard tons of songs that do it (specifically, songs where the whole structure is just long soft part then loud part, as opposed to soft loud soft loud loud soft soft loud). that said, the way the dynamics crest and fall as you point out is incredibly compelling and adds another dimension to the long soft part before the climax that makes it more than just a "long soft part"
And honestly...there are only so many ways to open an album. Nearly every way could be considered "generic" at this point. It works very well here.
as a result of its dead simple overarching structure (soft, then loud) and constant repetition of the same rhythmic idea for the majority of its duration, i also think "intro" is inherently more simplistic overall than the other songs on the album. when you get down to the details of it, the song's not actually that simple at all--it's incredibly detailed and the fundamental rhythmic idea is kinda irregular--but songs have to be viewed at both the levels of their little details and their full, overarching scope. and speaking solely (but no less importantly) to the latter, it's relatively simple.
dont get me wrong, i recognise that that's all done to great effect on the song, and i'm a big fan of simplicity, and frankly, i think the song is fucking incredible. but when comparing the songs, structural variety is a factor that makes "intro" pale in comparison slightly against the others.

The Hotelier aren't pioneers in 'emo rock". They haven't done anything new. They probably will never do anything new. They're just better at what everyone else has ever done than about anyone else who has ever done it.

alright, that's fair.
however...you lose half a point for using unusually large text.
;)

unusually large text happens whenever i use the "quote" bb code thing.
just occurred to me that there could be a new album this year.

I saw this somewhere too. No idea where, though, now that I'm thinking about it.
