Creature lives was basically weird filler whereas once more round the sun has all real songs

i don't think they'd close out a special hometown show with a song that's "weird filler"

"if any of you havent heard that album do yourself a fucking favor and listen to it"

"Battle at Sea" is top 5 mastodon for me. The drumming on that song is insane.

Actually it sounds more like Joy to the World, both just descending major scales

so it has a very basic melody much in line with your average lullaby, but what's the problem with that? I think that's why it really works.

Anyone who has heard "Heart of a Dragon" knows what a really bad children's song ripoff sounds like. "Creature Lives" is amusing to poke fun at but it's not a bad song.

Yeah I'm not saying it's bad but you can't say it's a real mastodon song like Capillarian Crest or

Oblivion or something, it's just an amusing interlude/weird thing

I wouldn't listen to it on its own, but at least it's not Peter Cottontail.

its definitely a real mastodon song. i think its awesome that they've covered so much ground musically throughout their career. the fact that it can stand next to songs like oblivion or seabeast or colony of birchmen is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a fan of these dudes

^precisely. it's a bit quirky, but it stands on its own and in context with other Mastodon tunes.

The most on-point and confident Mastodon has been in years. I'm honestly not bothered by the slightly more mainstream-ish approach to this. They sound like they're having fun, and I sure as hell am too.
