I always thought this was a great follow up to For Emma but of course people are going to judge this harshly after an album like that.

The correct answer is that both albums are fucking amazing and there's no shame in preferring one over the other (I prefer For Emma myself)

Also agreed this album is their best. For Emma is brilliant, but this album is more diverse, unpredictable, and ... hopeful I guess? I can't name a bad song off this record, whereas there was a couple of more 'forgettable' ones on their debut. But hey, maybe your mood plays a large part in determining what album you prefer. The first one is perfect for a post-break up record. As I said, this one feels more hopeful and I can identify with that in more recent years.
Either way, their first two albums are amazing. Most recent one isn't really my cup of tea.

Doof 3.0 is my original rating - I’ve just revisited in light of the new one. First time hearing the full thing since my first bout of listens to this. Then I was frustrated by how emotionally grabby it felt and also disliked his vocals here. Now the vocals don’t bother me and I realize the arrangements are too beautiful to worry about how grabby it may be, it’s widescreen beauty. I think originally the shadow/expectations of For Emma loomed too high. Rating will go up.
Now I’m scared to revisit 22, A Million...

Second half lost me a tiny bit but yeah those first 5 are really something. I always loved “Beth/Rest” though and I think that remains my favorite.
