It’s too bad to hear but gives what they did afterwards, Marrow, an interesting context. Way less heavy, more raw and desolate and basically no more clean vocals heard from Haughm besides like one or two verses in Monolith, and same with folksy acoustic guitar, giving one of its main appearances in that same section. But despite that raw bm sound Marrow has more light sections of ambient, drone, and post-rock than any of their other full-lengths besides The Mantle.

Despite having a lot of lighter parts like the entirety of Ghosts of Midwinter Fires, Marrow still has both the darkest (most of Black Lake Nidstang and all of To Drown) and the heaviest (Into the Painted Grey) moments of their full-length discography, so it doesn't feel lighter or less heavy than this one to me ... In the end, it's probably their most diversified release (hm ... maybe The Mantle comes close), and I think that's one of the reasons so many people seem to be slightly irritated by it.
On another note, Agalloch binges are always awesome (:

I think, to some, Marrow was a retread of The Mantle, and signified a lack of new ideas for Agalloch
I can see how some might say that, but I pretty significantly disagree. In a way, Marrow feels like a refinement of each of the sounds on the three previous albums rolled into one

That’s right, found out my work lets us listen to music, so an Agalloch binge of their remastered was needed in celebration. And yes Marrow is very varied and different from what came before, the main reason I respect is as much as I do. Definitely some of the fastest, most metal sections of their discog too, pretty trebly and raw, whereas Ashes and Serpent are a lot heavier, sludgier, full, and thick, especially Serpent, besides those awesome Musk Ox interludes.

Yeah for sure, so are the others since The Mantle is mostly not metal.

whatevs hawks. it's the most "agalloch" agalloch album. whether or not the ideas translate is a toss up.

I need to give Marrow more of a chance, I guess. I just always tend to reach for the first three records whenever I am in the mood to listen to Agalloch.

Marrow has some of their most rewarding moments, but probably isn't quite as incredible as any of the first 3. It's close though I'd say, and a grower.

imo it depends on what heaviness means to you. Marrow is their most black metally at times, especially Into the Painted Grey (like their "Wreath" by Opeth), but Marrow actually has more light, clean sections than any of their full-lengths besides The Mantle overall. Aesthetically Ashes and Serpent sound a lot "heavier" and more metal-based to me.

That's because this is better. All Agalloch slays though, well apart from Serpent which is just alright.
