idk how people can't prefer the warm, solemn piano and strings and horn sections on this tbh

I think this album has the most emotional impact for me, and Alligator is the most fun, but HV is in that sweet spot of poignancy and catchiness.

are you saying your honesty trumps my honesty? cause honestly, High Violet is catchier than Boxer. I don't really have any proof though.

hv isn't really going for catchiness in the same way as boxer is, it's an altogether different approach to songwriting

yea hv is more about subtlety and atmosphere

Melodies in HV are more addicting than their other albums. Stuck in my head much longer. That chorus in Runaway is constantly looping in my head when I run through that album.

yah i think most people can agree it isn't catchier but clearly isn't meant to be either. the atmosphere on certain tracks is excellent - again i come back to conversation 16. but that song builds a really good atmosphere and wastes it in the latter half

'i was afraid i'd eat your brains cause i'm evil' is completely mood-shattering. it shifts into silliness and the emotional weight of the song is just gone. idk, sometimes their lyrics are atrociously bad (i know what they're referencing there too, i just don't think it works well)

What are they referencing? I always assumed he was just really into imagery and never took his lyrics too seriously, so it never had any negative impact on my enjoyment of their music.

Though the ending to Slow Show are some of my favorite lyrics.

yah england has that ridiculously good build

north: you think he's being sincere? it's just like, there's this gorgeous background choir and soft atmospheric music and then it shifts into that and i just don't get it. it's actually a reference to a comic. high violet doesn't have a mistaken for strangers, ada, racing like a pro, and so on -- nothing that immediately jumped out at me as being as good. sorrow, terrible love, and a few others have revealed themselves to be excellent through repeat plays, but they're not as immediate and, for me, have about the same replay value as their other stuff that i got into immediately

"high violet doesn't have a mistaken for strangers, ada, racing like a pro, and so on" Blood Buzz Ohio is that song for me. It was the first song by them that I loved, and really got me into them. Might be why I have a preferential bias towards HV.
