"yeah they sold out even 18 y/o barista chicks would like this"
You got me thinking about finding a way to integrate Ulcerate in a solid pick-up line

im sorry bro but do you hear how hoggards riffs work on this compared to literally all their other material
its just INTERESTING they decide to sound more conventional than they ever have after being signed to metal blade, especially the riffs. you know u had them thoughts when jamming this for the first time
im not even saying its a weakness tho, shows them moving towards a more conventional approach to hooks and stuff, but I still think its up there with some of their best work quality-wise

maybe ill clarify - i think the changes im referring to are probably more about hoggard specifically than the band as a whole, altho on a few listens it def seems like jamie went a bit more straightforward (IE i THINK using cymbals a lot less than on previous releases)
but with how deep their music is and how high ive been so far whilst listening my view could change tomorrow. hoggard is so damn good you sometimes dont truly discover what he is doing until 8 listens later

I do think you’ll find that he’s doing more than you think here over time. This is probably my favorite Hoggard performance since EiF. Of course, harmonically this is much more conventional, but other than that I don’t find it particularly less dense or complex than the last 3 records. EiF is another story

its not even that hes "doing less" or the riffs are worse, in fact a few of his best may be on here
only stating that they absolutely moved slightly to a more conventional approach. For me, Shrines was more MELODIC, but it wasnt any more conventional DM than any of their other post-debut releases.
lead hook/riff for title track is STUPID hard tho my god, hoggard can do it all

Only if you're deep into Ulcerate already.
Even then it took me 4 or so listens until that main riff finally got to me

idk man destroyers is pretty accessible if youre familiar with neurosis, immolation, gorguts already

I agree but isnt that a big if? If youre familiar with those three you can get in to most post/death metal bands. In comparison to Obscura most things are accessible.
