Let's not forget that Rylan appears to be pretty much unaltered on the new record, based on the clip from the preview, and that song rules. So no matter your take on the singles so far there's gonna be at least one studio 10/10 NTL classic for you to enjoy.

Anyone here heard of Ryan Downey? Think you’d all like His stuff you’re into the national!

New song is pretty good. I'm predicting I Am Easy to Find will be a solid 3.5, probably no higher than 4 unless like half the album is full of classics, which is of course possible.

Not got into the first single yet but I found Light Years truly remarkable. Beautiful tune.

Light Years is nice yea, one of their better piano ballads from this decade. Really curious to hear what the almost 7 minute long songs sound like. I bet it'll be their most varied album yet.

"Varied" is a scary word for me; I'm sure there will be a lot of amazing material but one will have to wonder if they couldn't have made a better, more focused 45 minute album than a 65 minute one that's all over the place. I'm still keeping my hopes up though as I've dug the singles so far. Interesting that they went with the opener and the closer as the first two singles.

Yea I'm a little concerned too, wouldn't mind if they needed to take more time to make something as perfect as it can be. I was really surprised a new album was dropping so soon after this.

The first single, Soul, threw me off with how upbeat electronic/indie pop it sounded. I'm afraid like half of the album won't be too amazing, but I'll be happy if it's at least as good as Sad Songs.

itll be polarizing or another masterpiece. I'll be floored if they go Arcade Fire on us and plummet

they've been writing the new album since around 2013 I believe, and some of it like Rylan dates back year before that. you could even consider Sleep Well Beast as just the cuts they felt didn't fit on the other album they were working on. so I don't think we're looking at a rush job no matter how it turns out

That's possible, they could've written a lot of the new album before Sleep Well Beast was even released. I'm sure they wouldn't rush or put out something subpar.

They've been playing some of the new album's tracks live since before Sleep Well Beast under different names. "Sometimes I don't Think" and "So Far So Fast" for example.

for context here's the interview I was thinking of - where they mention developing the two albums basically in parallel and where the new songs date back to https://www.nme.com/news/music/im-not-thinking-trump-national-talk-summer-plans-next-album-2304644

"You told us before that you already had plenty of new material written. Will you be winding down to head into the studio after these shows?

“We’ve been in the studio. We’ve been recording wherever we go. We had a bunch of stuff that we just recorded in Buenos Aires when we were in South America just because we had a day or so.We’ve been constantly just writing. Even before ‘Sleep Well Beast’ was done, there was already a bunch of stuff cooking, but when Trump won it just didn’t feel right for whatever reason. I can’t even tell you why. ‘Sleep Well Beast’ had the pivot when the world changed.

“We stayed in the kitchen. We don’t do that thing where we don’t talk to each other for months anymore. I don’t know what form or when this next album is going to come out, but we’ve been doing some other really interesting collaborations with people too. It’s all way more than halfway done.”"

If the first single is any indication (not spoiling any more for me) it'll be at least a 4.

@luc second single is totally different. (But I'd argue it's one of their best songs in ages)
