"I don't find things like that on albums like Ghost Reveries or Still Life. Now, if we're talking about Black Rose Immortal and stuff, that's a whole different thing, admittedly."
or like half the tracks on watershed?

Porcelain Heart is the only track on that one that has that problem. You could definitely make an argument for Lotus Eater, sure, but I (surprisingly) don't have that reaction despite that jazz part. I honestly think it's well integrated, even though I still try to figure out how they did that because it shouldn't work theoretically. All the other ones work out absolutely fine.

i really dig watershed despite how all over the place it is. the title track here isn't really like those songs though. it, like other tracks here, has verses and choruses that actually repeat, which is a trait of more traditional song structures and also something opeth hasn't employed very often in their discography. that's all I'm saying.

I think sometimes people forget that those who aren't down for the new sound aren't against it because it's not metal, but are against it cause it's just..lame as hell. I say this because damnation was a huge hit with fans (atleast compared to this)

Yeah, because Damnation had a less polished sound and felt more freely flowing. Also, it had a lot of passion and emotion and atmosphere. Things this record lacks. The closest the band has came to capturing their former passion is on the song 'Eternal Rains Will Come' from Pale Communion. And even then, that song has like 2 minutes of wanking before it really kicks in. Lol

What supremejelly said. Tbh when they first announced this would be a prog album without metal I was really fucking interested to see what they would do. Unfortunately, it was just boring prog rather than interesting prog.
And agreed with Eons on Damnation.

Lmfao dude I love Orchid but it is structurally all over the place - each song sounds like 4 different tracks that just didnt end.
I totally agree with you on the Devin Townsend point, though.

Idk man I’m one of the bwp fanboys. Their songwriting was easily it’s strongest there.
Still Life is also up there. Probably a bit more technical than bwp tho

MAYH is his best screams hands down.

"Fucking Orchid legit has Akerfeldt's best vocals. How the hell do you not hear that??? Seriously"
dude have you really not heard demon of the fall?
|

I’m on my phone. Didn’t mean to delete that. But yah it’s true
Yeah demon is one of his best performances. That whole album has his most brutal harsh vocals, they also weren’t doing the opeth waltz that they would use so much on still life and bwp

I never liked that album as much as everyone else. It’s solid but it never grabbed me as much as others.

I used to jam atonement a lot, I love it

I love Orchid, moreso than BWP, that probably makes me weird. Favourite harsh vox are definitely on MAYH. Still Life has the most balanced song-writing & is every great thing about this band condensed into one cohesive package.

Yes.

It's an unusual opinion but understandable. BWP and Orchid are completely different albums.

Don’t get me wrong it’s close (in fact they’re right next to each other in my ranking) but I prefer Orchid. Outside of the bookends BWP doesn’t hit the heights as regularly as other Opeth records do, I feel like it sacrifices those potential moments in favour of cohesion & ends up not sounding so ambitious.
For context I’m nitpicking here because both Orchid & BWP are 4.5/5 albums.

BWP was my first exposure to Opeth, I stumbled upon the album in a record store and the artwork was so haunting that I just blind-bought it, so I'm biased towards that album.
