I'm surprised to see this was well received enough for a 4.2

I liked the album before this one just fine, I felt like it was a step down

This wasn't much of a stylistic change from the one before, its pretty much a more mature version of Suburbia. So yeah I have no idea where your disdain is coming from.

Unless you thought this was a full album of Madelyns lol then I'd understand

I got 4 songs into this and was so bored. I ended up switching back to the new PUP. I love pop-punk and really like Sister Cities. Can someone explain to me why I cannot get into this at all? This is like my fifth time trying lol. It's just not interesting, catchy, or emotional in any way that's registering with me.

@sowing

Though I consider this their second greatest album, I think a lot of its power comes from being intimately familiar with The Upsides and Suburbia. It's hard for me to objectively speak on this record's strengths since that progression plays heavily into things, so I highly recommend giving those a listen in order.

That being said, the strength of this album comes from breaking a lot of conventional pop-punk norms and making it more "mature" and "deep" but, like, actually. There are heavy themes of loss and decay and feeling adrift, but without the shitty genre conventions. Musically, it's a very enveloping record that takes me back to the summer of '13 every time I listen to it. The riffs are deceptively catchy with subtle flourishes throughout. For instance, I didn't "get" Passing Through A Screen Door until I one day found myself humming nearly every part in my head. I would not call this an immediate record by any stretch, but there's a lot to discover with it and once it sinks its hooks in you, it's hard to let go.

Well that's as good an argument as any to keep listening. Hopefully I see in this what everyone else seems to someday. Right now I want to like this more than I do.

@Sowing No Closer to Your Heaven is more akin to Sister Cities if you havn't tried that

And the singers "Aaron West and the roaring twenties" solo records are phenomenal

I think where you're at in life definitely comes into play as far as getting the best connection with this album. I was in my 20s and a complete mess when this dropped so lyrics to songs like Passing Through a Screen Door just floored me

This album and No Closer to Heaven are one hell of a back to back album drop. This one is about as close perfect as I can picture an album being in this genre

Yeah I’m 29 and the “friends get married and have kids” thing just happened to me lol. But yeah it’s also pretty common to not have those things too, so the 26 line still hits but not as bad as it used to

Yeah, dating in your 20s in today's world is absolutely brutal. Especially in the area I live in. Nothing but trashy girls that only want drug addicts and losers they think they can "fix." And I refuse to do dating apps, my self esteem is low enough as is.

I feel ya on that, keep your head up though. Shit can change quickly. One day you’re by yourself and a few months later you can be spending life with someone…. And vice-versa lol
