I don't think anyone is arguing though that Metallica aren't important, I just think AiC is the better band, I don't see how Metallica influencing them and numerous artists necessarily makes them a better band, sure it might make them "more objectively compatible for best band of all time" - but let's be honest here, put aside the shenanigans, and talk about what music we prefer and not what is more important to archive.

Dirt's great Facelift is tight the rest are pretty good but severely unmemmorable havent heard any of the EPs yet.

alice are one of my all time favorite bands but i mean i think metallica released three albums in a row that were better than anything they came to release

I've been on way more of an AIC kick lately than Metallica but if we're going by records I'd say :
Jar of Flies > Dirt >= ...And Justice For All > Ride The Lightning > Alice in Chains s/t > Master of Puppets
