This album is still their best but honestly I love all their work.
One unique thing from this release that I miss from their later stuff though are the higher pitched screams/shrieks. On later albums, they don't hit in quite the same way as they do on this album. Like in Tapestry, when the screams kick in again around 7:50 is just 🧑🍳🤌
Can't tell if it's the production or just inevitable changes to Marc's voice over the years.

Just listened to this (and, by extension, NeO) for the first time, and I've gotta say, it's quite good. Really solid prog/death/black metal with some avant-garde and post-metal elements. With that said, I do think it's a bit overlong and riff-salad-y in parts; the production doesn't always help either, making the heavier parts sound really brickwalled and overbearing at times. Still, I was quite impressed with this... I'm curious about how Citadel will be, considering how condensed the runtime is compared to this

Citadel is prob my fave nowadays, the production is better for a start.

Yeah, I'm listening to that mammoth first track right now, and I already like it a bit better than what's on here tbh

Yep, just finished that part and it absolutely ripped. If the rest of the album goes this hard, I'm already predicting a 4.5 rating

Holy shit, Reveries from the Stained Glass Womb might be just as good. Definitely starting to regret not checking these guys out sooner

Ngl, even as a prog metal fan, I had the preconception that they'd be an overbearing riff salad-type band with a lack of songwriting focus - especially given Portal of I's daunting tracklist. But I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging the project was... and now that I'm wrapping up Citadel, I actually prefer it to this one

The thinking man's Opeth, this album is absolutely awesome, bringing all the progressive mastery of that band with some really nice technical flourishes, and even more musical diversity. This is so good.

Nah, they have much more intricacy and layering to their songwriting than Opeth, who are typically quite straightforward, they just sound amazing and have good structure to their writing. Ne Obliviscaris blow them away in terms of intricacy and how thought-provoking their songs can be.

this album is only more intricate than Opeth because it took like 90 years to make it. Everything else they've made pales in comparison to Opeth

yeah citadel was a massive drop in quality

this album is very captivating for what it is but everything else they've made is honestly pretty boring and underwhelming

Citadel and Exul are both as good, if not better, than this imo. They really haven't released a boring or bad album
