I probly have no idea what 'real' prog sounds like since I enjoy bands similar to what you said, Key. Well, unless Riverside is considered actual prog, but somehow I doubt that.

I have become pretty opposed to the label of "prog" over the years. Really, what constitutes something being prog? Usually I just consider bands to have progressive elements to their sound, as in forward moving, but I don't call them prog bands.

I unno I agree to an extent but then 70's prog has a very distinct sound imo so that kinda goes out the window I think

Yeah i mean more in the modern day. It has become a really vague term.

there are still plenty of bands who play in that 70's style today though. prog has become a very vague term. how an alternative rock album like this gets called prog is beyond me.

There are some biatches who call anything produced after 1999 "false prog" and will only accept something as prog if it's by Yes or Camel, whereas there are others that will call Muse prog. My arse is closer to prog than Muse.
What prog should be is music that consists of signature and riff changing structures without the staple "verse, chorus, verse, chorus" pattern that is present in stuff considered as prog such as Coheed (which I personally cannot stand).
There are still contemporary prog bands around - Riverside, Anathema, The Pineapple Thief (older stuff) and Beardfish, to name a few.
Karnivool is not prog bar a few songs such as New Day, and Fair To Midland is certainly not.
Essay over.

man, nice essay you wrote there.
i see your point, but I have to disagree with one line:
There are some biatches who call anything produced after 1999 "false prog"
I don't really see much of that. For instance, you mentioned Beardfish, I haven't seen anyone label them false prog. Same goes for Opeth's Heritage.
The main problem is that "prog" is no longer a useful term. We need to just use "prog" when talking about the old 70s bands, and come up with something new for bands that are progressing (ie mixing things up in some way) their respective genre's in modern times.

The thing is, most bands aren't just prog or not prog. A lot have elements of it and other genres, so its more "how much prog." Either way I try to avoid using the term as much as possible.

maybe it could be that the 70s stuff is "progressive rock" and anything newer with hints of that can be called "prog".
also, actually kind of like the genre tag "faux prog". i don't mind saying something like "i really enjoy faux prog. one of my favorite albums is de-loused in the comatorium" lol
