Always loved this record, been jamming High Violet and TWFM more lately and they are definitely better than I first perceived.

i have to say, after listening to this for some time: the latter half is WAY better than the former

high violet is nowhere near as good as people say imo. i still enjoy it, but the songs don't have the emotional heft as those here or on alligator or trouble will find me

what, if anything they have even more 'emotional heft'

hell no. this is way more poignant in my opinion.

like, songs like conversation 16 sound pretty melancholy for the first half, but then there's the 'i was afraid i would eat your brains because i'm evil' bit that completely removes me from the mood originally established, and then 'runaway' which is just boring as hell. afraid of everyone and everyone's ghost sound like filler - like, they're good songs, they just don't measure up to their other stuff. little faith has some of the best verses but a rather dry chorus. i still think the first two songs are ace though, and overall i think it's an excellent album, just not sure how anyone could think it's better than trouble will find me

'slipped,' 'i should live in salt,' 'fake empire,' etc (i could keep going on and on) are way more emotional imo than most everything on high violet, barring sorrow and the last track
