I get how that opening paragraph can be really showy but how was he pretentious? From what I saw of the comments I read from him he was a rather open minded fellow.

From what I saw of the comments I read from him he was a rather open minded fellow. he was pretentious by trying to sound ambiguously intellectual, and it came off, to me at least, that he was trying too hard to appease people's thoughts of "gee, he's deep!"
