yeah, i am obsessed with this. been making my way through their discog (out of order) to celebrate too while sprinkling this in and yeah, legitimately the best band to ever do it

Yeah this re-ignited my love for them again. I sincerely love all their albums. The only thing I dont really return to is pacific myth.

Doesn't help that the streaming sites all have the worst version of Pacific Myth I still dont know wtf they were thinking with that remaster job. Harbinger especially gets badly neutered with what they did to the piano parts.

I can see myself slapping a 5 on this in time. The musicianship is incredible.

Loved pacific myth when the songs were released as singles. The sound they ended up going with on full release really drags it down imo
This rules tho

the high vocal part for the climax chorus in Tidal is completely lost in the remaster, fucking infuriating

Regarding Rody's vocal performance, I think the crux of what makes Palimpsest my favorite PTH record is how far he fucking sent it for that album. The ending part of "From The Sky" is still my favorite moment for the band, and it's frightening to imagine even attempting to sing that passage.
I don't disagree that the vocals lean a little towards James LaBrie now, but Rody is 40 years old and in "Within", I can absolutely rock with where he is now. The changes in sound and vibrato may simply be representative of the years of vocal strain and pushing his shit to the max.

musically this feels pretty standard, like PTH doing PTH. i enjoy what they do so its certainly not bad, but it does blur together quite a lot. the song-writing is clearly where the focus and effort went and there is some great tracks though I like the first 3 tracks (excluding the interludes) more than the second 3. the closer feels like the biggest example of them neglecting to include a solid hook or central melody or something in favour of the narrative it goes through. again not bad, but kinda left me whelmed.
good album but one of their weaker releases for me

I think the theatrics and clean bits were really pumped up here. it's quite different from his Palimpsest range
btw, going back to their new drummer being a beast. I re-listened to Palimpsest. it's a nice disc drum wise, but the difference is night/day with Within. Mike was going for very normal fills, transition, this new guy really goes hard each fill. there are ghost notes, high speed passages that really show his chops. most techy PtH disc despite having also some of their punkiest sounding songs.

Thats why I've always liked the band, they were tech af but never let that be to the detriment of the song.
