I thought I would like this more than I do. I mean, it's fine. They do some interesting things with synths and pop-leaning tones, beats, and vocals in-between heavier, chunky riffs, but it feels too...I dunno...phoned-in, I guess? The one exception being Gifted Every Strength, genuinely a fantastic song. Outside of that though, band sounds exhausted and doing it for the sake of doing it. If Loathe and Thornhill are in the same lane, Loathe is going the speed limit and Thornhill swerved past them going 95.

they’re all friends anyway it doesn’t matter to compare them if they all share ideas

"That’s why hate that word “pretentious”

totally agree with ya, brother. And I see what you're saying; trying different things certainly does not make something inherently better. To me, however, it worked like a motherfucker this time around. I'm just tired of all the formulaic death metal that's usually at the top of every list around these parts, so for better or worse, this feels like something different, and I appreciate it

Loathe is one of those bands that is so close to sticking the landing. Some of their most interesting stuff was the experimentation ("Block of Flats") that they attempt on this release. Probably will give it a second listen at some point.

Still think the middle stretch save The Way it Breaks is the worst part of the album. Meet My Maker is solid too but damn I really hate Revenant and think Harder to Pretend is just a snooze. Athena and Nothing Like the Knife are pretty forgettable interludes too imo

I think there are some interesting ideas here that are just entombed by the production being a compressed brick wall hive of bass. The production is ruining it for me, but if you fuck with it im glad

This is probably not something I would naturally veer towards regardless, but the production is really a killer. It's not as completely unlistenable as that Boundaries release (lol), yet some of the choices do lend themselves to the same kinda blob of compressed homogeneity that Ectier is describing

I almost feel like the band intentionally massacred the production in the loud sections because they couldn’t think of anything interesting to do there, so they just filled every bit of empty space with noise and called it a day. like Gemini and revenant is pretty uninspiring. When the “heavy” parts hit, I’m basically just hearing drums and white noise.
