Drone, Aozora and the last two tracks are the ones I can see myself coming back to
|

Opal is kinda whatever, Salva is one of their best
|

it has like zero riffs I don’t get it

It has no riffs so it’s not a good song? Awful take.

I mostly listen to rock music for riffs, sue me!

The definition of "good" varies between people.

ngl i love a good riff, am incredibly pumped when i hear a big one, but never understood people who latch onto them as the main feature of a certain band or album.

Tbf there's quite a few tasty riffs on here anyway but yeah when I listen to progressive rock it's not normally primarily for the riffs.

Yeah, I don't listen to Karnivool for riffs tbh, I'm just after some memorable tunes. I put on some thrash or death metal for the riffs lol.

MAN! Can't get over how these guys just know how to write a fucking song. I know it sounds super basic and stupid, but it's just somewhat of a lost art for a band to be able to write a powerful, memorable piece of rock music nowadays, and these gits have managed to pull it off with basically every song on here. The hooks, melodies, choruses, buildups, wind-downs, these guys just know exactly what the fuck they're doing and we're all beneficiaries. I for one really can't think of another contemporary rock band that manages to hit all of those "basics" of good songwriting on the head, while still being technically engaging enough, all while not being built for "a specific mood". Love this fucking record, right up there with Sound Awake, and for my money, even more enjoyable as a whole

As hard as I try, Opal just doesn't hit. Rest of the album is excellent though.

for me Sound Awake is no skips, on this at the moment I could take or leave Conversations, Reanimation, and the last two

Man that Animation chorus is mean. Love the little note played on the heavy riff

There's definitely more to the album's merit than breaking the concept down to prog. I'm a strong advocate for calling out the heart of this to be 90's alt-rock, similar to the path Thrice has been following. The ending of Conversations is so gloomy, almost gothicy like if you feel indifferent about that track, I think you're simply not getting the gestalt of this one.

I always skip Set Fire on SA. Pretty annoying song. Drone here is the closest to being skippable for me, not at that stage yet. Opal is my favorite song on here, weird to see people not digging / omitting it while speaking on the album
|
| |
it's quite likely that I'm simply not getting the gestalt tbf

Opal rips. Best riff on the album imo. "Quiet like death was around" into the riff gets me every time.
