Youthanasia's almost 32 years old, probably Dave's prime vocal range. Can't really expect anything near that.

I cannot stress enough how much I disagree with Fantano a lot of the time but he really nailed the review for this. Like literally almost exactly how I feel about it.

That said I don’t think doing the Ride the Lightning cover is inherently a bad idea but god damn it’s literally just a worse version of the original song… like I would’ve expected it to be faster, or angrier, or *bare minimum* a flashier solo or something and not just almost note for note the same as the 40 year old song, AND with worse production.

I really wanted to like this, idk man. I dig the final track. That’s really the only song here I enjoy fully front to back

Fantano is a fart sniffing self righteous dickhead, but he is knowledgeable and skilled enough to make a compelling argument sometimes. But damn do I really hate his tastes sometimes, he treats music with an almost "This deserves to exist or not" type mentality that I get annoyed with a lot of people who listen to music critically.

my comment from page 1:

'Glad there won’t be any more albums because this is underwhelming. He should continue to tour occasionally but most of the new music since what feels like forever has been poor. Sure, the guitars are great in spots but not enough to save any of his recent records. My 2.5 is generous.'

i no longer feel this way the more i listened to this, jumped an entire point higher

Interesting to see that now they are done with studio albums, it holds true that their best works pretty much all come after lineup shake ups and then they drop off in quality afterwards with varying results.

Even the worst moments of this stand far above 72 Seasons. I hope Metallica can finish one day this strongly.

Not sure about that. 72 Seasons is annoying but Lux Aeterna, Screaming Suicide and If Darkness Had a Son easily top anything found here, and Inamorata isn't far behind. Which doesn't change the fact that almost everything else on that album blows.

Lol almost all those are my mid tracks off of 72 Seasons, I love Room of Mirrors, Chasing Light, and Too Far Gone?

Seen a bunch of megadeth fans on the Megadeth reddit sub call this their best album in forever and acting like it's a top tier album. So much bias on fan subs man. Band drops the most average album under the sun and it's a masterpiece by the core fanbase lol

@Futures Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning are their shortest and also their best

I honestly cannot imagine putting this anywhere near Rust in Peace or even Countdown to Extinction, absolutely delusional.

Tbh their last two were also very mid but they were better than this. Or maybe they weren’t, maybe my memory is off. I don’t care enough to listen to them again.

As far as where this goes with the rest of the discog, idk. I think Super Collider is definitely worse, I dunno. This is honestly probably their second worst, and a lot of that is just how fucking disappointing it is to me. And while I don’t really care for the last two Metallica albums either, they easily clear this. But this one does have a step up on them for at least having the decency to not be 90 fucking minutes

"like I would’ve expected it to be faster"

Dave RTL is faster than the original

Listening to both of them back to back, you’re totally right. I hadn’t listened to the original in a while.

Even still, weaker vocals, weaker production, just not really enough of a difference for me to not think it’s just pointless.

it's a bonus track btw not on the actual album. it's just something fun for the last megadeth album. not that serious lol

It's fine, on the account that:

- the screams are dope

- tired singing isn't that unfitting

- the more modern production sounds pretty cool

- c'mon, it's Megadeth going out with a Metallica cover
