I notice a strange phenomenon with Fantano where the same people that can't stop talking about how much they don't care about him, are also incredibly vocal when he gives a take they disagree with. It's similar energy to someone who says "mainstream media is controlling what everyone thinks!" and then believes every headline they see
The commonly held "who cares what fantano thinks" take is fine, because no one has to, he's just a guy giving his opinion on the internet. There's probably a more important conversation about what his popularity does to the perception of his takes by fans. People put this odd expectation of objectivity onto him when he is very clear that he's being very subjective in every review. Being insanely popular will do that I guess
Regarding interview bias, I will say he's done interviews in the past before or after giving an album a mid score, though I'd also wager he is probably more interested in seeking out interviews with artists he is enjoying or into in general though

fantano is still a fine enough critic but yeah i'd never trust him to be completely objective when it comes to the danny, peggy, death grips etc. niche and that's completely fine with me. he essentially "came up" with those guys and owes a lot of his success to being their flagship fan.

Ya, I’ll always point out that the month following his Daughters 10 review their Spotify monthly listeners jumped from 20k to like 200k, when I finally saw them live I even overheard people talking about how his review turned them onto the band. I know that was a while ago but the dude definitely has a lot of influence.
Idk. I like him. I don’t watch him religiously or anything and I DEFINITELY disagree with a lot of his takes but he’s always come across as insightful and genuine, and the dude does know what he’s talking about for the most part. Even the times where I vehemently disagree with his takes I at least understand where he’s coming from. His Deftones reviews before private music are the first thing that springs to mind. I loved Gore and Ohms but he makes some solid points on both reviews from what I remember.
