"Crazy how the narrative around Ohms seems to have changed. Wasn't everyone raving about it when it came out?"
A bit overhyped for sure

I need to revisit Ohms cause I remember that one being a grand return to form haha. This is great so far, standard Deftones quality, some parts feel quite stale and I don't know why for now. Maybe it being too riff-centered and those more mellow moments don't do much for me? It might change upon future listens though.

Like cmon, I didn't catch any moment like the back half of Spell of Mathematics.

That probably explains why i'm enjoying it lol, cXz is a highlight for me right now

On first listen this is a hard album to find my footing with. Lots of disorienting moments, not to say that's necessarily a bad thing
But it does have its own identity: the dream world of KNY infected with the sinister Terry Date-ness of Ohms
Madonna might still be the best song

First impressions: tied with gore as my least favorite overall albeit with a few awesome moments
Too many tracks promise to go somewhere then never really do
Riffs that just seem like tired rehashes of riffs they've used 100 times before, hardly any memorable ones
Chino's pipes are declining as much as he tries to hide it, it's getting pretty obvious now
Maybe future listens will change my mind but I can't see myself continuing to listen to more than 3 or 4 tracks, including the two singles

>too many tracks promise to go somewhere then never really do
probably my biggest criticism, despite it not affecting my rating that much. i feel like most of the tracks lack a fulfilling crescendo/climax. it's auditory edging to the point where it feels purposeful. it's like the opposite of the new deafheaven album where every track felt like like it almost overindulged in its climax. a lot of songs on here feel like they could be openers, on deafheaven's latest lp each track feels like it could be a closer

This is Chino's best performance in 10 years (Gore is almost 10 years old) and people are still somehow complaining about his voice

yeah okay this is better than Ohms, nice.

all that being said i really enjoy quite a few songs off this and unlike ohms/gore can see myself returning to said tracks often. i could see this teetering between a 3.5-4. this is for sure nowhere near KNY tho. kind of feels like brand new's science fiction where it pays homage to a lot of their previous albums

Yeah same. I love Deftones so i still think this is quality stuff but i also think aside from the singles there arent that many standout moments or catchy parts i find myself hearing in my head or singing to myself.
Must listen to it more but i dont really feel the urge to for some reason lol.
It will eventually click i know. cxc, i think about you all the time and departing the body were really enjoyable

funny you bring up cxz as the transition into the clapping portion felt like we were finally getting a classic deftones track but it stops abruptly and goes right back to the repetitive lyric/riff. still an extremely strong track tho

I can't actually recall a single riff or vocal melody right now.
Even Gore shit like prayers/triangles stuck in my head and Rubicon was a climactic closer from the first time I heard it
There are multiple instances here where literally just ONE chord change could have elevated the riff to something more memorable that might even give you goosebumps but instead it was just some insipid major scale forgettable chug fest
Which makes it more frustrating to listen to than albums which are miles away from being any good

yea and that further reinforces the notion that this is not even in the same universe as KNY. every single track off kny features a legendary stephen riff, entombed haunts my dreams to this day for example. despite that i still think this lp succeeds in other areas enough to have a lot of staying power

“This is Chino's best performance in 10 years”
12. But this could be his best vocal performance I think. Much much improved from Gore and Ohms
