Goddamn. Winona is fucking incredible. Quickly overtaking Doberman as my favorite track here.
This feels like one of those albums where 75% of the songs will become my “favorite” at some point. This is also quickly elevating to the 5 level for me. I never like to instantly give out 5s so I’ll give it a little more time. But goddamn it’s good. I doubt anything could overtake it as AOTY, barring maybe the new Deftones (but it would have to be better than gore and ohms, both of which I still really like though).

Not much competition so far, but yeah it's gonna take quite the magnum opus to dethrone this as AOTY.
Let's see what you got other bands!

This really sets the bar for AOTY incredibly high lol
There's thornhill coming up, but I'd say that one's just gonna be a nice deftone-sy album. Chevelle will be Chevelle. But I've heard converge is prepping up a new album...I'll be bating my breath for that one

if you bother to listen to only stuff 3.8 and higher it's generally hard to be wooed by anything anymore but yea, an album like this does appear once in every few years

the only thing in the coming weeks that has even a slight chance of contesting this as my AOTY is the new Messa album.

#1 black metal on RYM. Varg's Nazi orbiters are probably seething

Messa. Finally someone mentioned an actual good band, lol (no, even ‘verge in the year of our Lord 2025 doesn’t count)
I’m curious enough about this to check, but based on my past experiences with Deafheaven I’m sceptical about the results

"I’m curious enough about this to check, but based on my past experiences with Deafheaven I’m sceptical about the results "
not sure which one was the problem, but I'd say this album stands the best chance of changing that skepticism.

"Lonely People With Power is a masterpiece that turns Deafheaven’s story on its head"
This is s fantastic album, but I don't think it "turns Deafheaven's story on its head"
This is Deafheaven as we've known them to be, and it's a strong release with great songs. It's also nice that they didn't give fans IGII & instead reverted back to the form that elevated "Sunbather" to such high regard and figured out how to cherry pick the elements that they enjoyed from that record, you know, the one you call "cosplay".

I've been sleeping on this. Finally jammed it yesterday and I'm impressed. I like every track and genuinely enjoy the interludes.

Body Behavior is such a fun track. Love the different vocal approach in that one.

The bass is so good on Body Behavior, glad to see them showcase Chris Johnson.

Body Behavior gets nasty. Also, shoutout to the guy on a previous page who said Doberman was such an apt song title for a song that goes really hard. I thought the same thing.
