"None of this felt forced to me. The growls sound better than ever, the orchestral additions are fantastic, and each song sounds very different than the last but its still cohesive."
People here just being pretentious. The growls are fine. None of it sounds forced at all

cohesive? sure. memorable in any way? not so much. much like the last album theres very little here that i can latch onto. and on the rare occasion that they do hit on something they manage to fuck it up real quick.

Opeth’s fanbase is pretentious because the band is pretentious lol. Has been since they started making music, and always will be. That’s their appeal. Their shtick started out as the “not like other girls” of black metal

love him but i can't really disagree that mikael has def that kinda attitude. shit on fans for years who were mad they ditched metal (partially deserved tho lol). i don't personally think the music is pretentious tho just what he truly wants to make with his obvious eccentric influences. he's just that into obscure fartsniffing prog lol

It's clear with this album that Mikael's heart is not into his old sound anymore. It feels like he made this album just to shut people up about no growls than out of an artistic want.

§5 is the highlight for me so far. Gonna take many more listens to see where this truly lands.

This album harkens back to the old Opeth more than any other album since 2008 lol.

Pale imitation though innit

Meh, not really. They're 50 lol. Them going this hard is appreciated when they could've rode the new sound until they retired. If Mikael aged vocally like Chris Barnes, I would agree

This is so much more a step forward into a new identity than a hearkening back, I think asking this album to be like old Opeth is pretty much the easiest way to be disappointed in it.
That said I can't get enough of this so I'm clearly biased. S5 rulesssss

from interviews he said he wanted a challenge for himself again to see if he's still got it which is a refreshing attitude

"It really does just sound like their new stuff with growls. The attempts to harken back to their old atmosphere sound feeble and forced"
lmfao. Like I said some people were foaming at the mouth waiting for the album to drop so they could have this reaction.

Agreed with Fowl.

@shape It’s just my opinion man. I love this band to death and respect Mikael a lot as i have indicated in previous comments. Not foaming at anything

I mean the band is kinda selling it like this though right? If they were just stepping forward there would be no bits of old Opeth in it. They tried to make this sound (and look!) like middle career opeth in many ways

the hype was there but i think the expectation should've always been newpeth plus growls which sounds like what we got.
