Good lad.

It definitely deserves it. Not instant mind blower but slow burning appreciator and thems the best ones.

I honestly wasn't huge on her collab with Rustin Man (even though its still very good) but man this one just hits every spot. I find minimalism in this type of music is just perfect for me. The ambience and the atmosphere is just so on point here.

Yeah this is definitely a more rounded, overall satisfying listen than her previous one or anything else she has done for that matter.

Is it as revolutionary as Portishead of course not, is it more delicate and a better listen?

Absolutely

I've just gotten into Portishead this year and I LOVE them but yeah this one somehow makes minimal chamber folk and turns it into an epic listen every time. Delicate is the perfect word tbh.

I’m sorry to ruin the party but for me the album really starts with Reaching Out. It gets very good from there, but the initial batch of songs just drags too long.

I partially agree with gabba. Second half is incredible. First half is really good. But there's a clear gap in between.

first half has Burden of Life tho. I mean otherwise it’s maybe not totally incorrect idk. I don’t feel this quite like I did when it was released for some reason (think I was either just really hyped for new Beth, or it hasn’t held up well to my initial overplaying of it).

Has held up for me. Burden of Life is top 3-5 SOTY for me.

I mean this is a great album for a not particularly compelling year, but something tells me my significant Beth-bias played a part in suckering me in early on. I played it a lot and now for whatever reason it’s lost a little lustre

In fact revisiting only seems to do it harm now

I’m not really sure when this album would hit me most…feels an album without a niche, more a chin stroke’r.

I’ll be good and give it two more goes next week before finalising my end of year list.

‘for a not particularly compelling year’

Looking at RYM I’ve awarded the most 4+ ratings this year since 1994

Maybe a few soft 4's...but then also a lot of potentially harsh 3.5's

V good year imo
