toying with the idea that pale iris is not the worst song here and that its rumor of light instead. not that pale iris has grown on me at all lol but at least it doesnt tank the momentum immediately after the opener with even lazier vocal writing (sans the chorus which bar the solo is the only part of the song that stands out to me)

love everything else

it is kind of funny to me that the two i cant connect to are the second track and the penultimate track lol cant think of an album i like this much like that so uh props for symmetry i guess?

i guess i missed them uploading full track by track commentary on youtube lol but that was pretty insightful stuff. biggest takeaways

- end to excess and wave were the first songs written for this, not long after the self titled was finished

- pale iris was initially thrown together as a standalone single. they banged it out in a few days separate from the sessions for this album

- past life persona basically evolved from a little unused riff jesse found in an old project that he liked enough that he built the whole song around it, and the chorus came to him half asleep on the bus which he voice memo'd and then barely changed for the final record

- seems wave is his favorite song here

glimpse, wave, blue reverie and idle wild can honestly stand up with anything on self titled. staying power of this has been really strong for me which is amazing because erra's biggest priority should clearly be making me happy

yeah i am really receptive of what makes this one special. this album has shown me that they're the type of band i've always wanted them to be, and that's a band that change shit up a lot purely because they're just doing whatever the fuck they want

in a way thats almost kinda made me dig drift more than i used to since thats also kind of emblematic of that mindset. both cure and drift feel very close (albeit both are a little short from their full potential in their own ways) to the vision the had in mind when they set out to make them, and it's more about whether you're down with the lens they're using to explore that heavy/pretty dynamic on those particular albums

i get why its been polarizing though since self titled comprehensively pulls from everything enough that its pretty agreeable amongst most walks of erra fans (that and its well documented that i think the self titled is the best album of the last 30 ish years lol)

end to excess has been getting a lot of play outta me lately shits phenomenal. that grandiose intro + jesses vocal layering = chefs kiss

woah nice i like pale iris now

like yeah i still think its chorus is pretty well below jesses standards and its a really baffling choice for a penultimate, but that doesnt really invalidate the extent to which everything else about it kinda rips. i think i like the single mix a little more though since the production during the breakdown is a little less cluttered

I wish I liked this album that much because this is a pretty big drop off from the self titled for me. I thought if I left it a few months I would like it more...nope I think I like it less now.

Sorry meng :[

Not much of a fan of the drum sound on this, less sick riffs and memorable leads, and some of these hooks just don't do it for me at all.
