I've never listened to This Is Hardcore, I should

"This Is Hardcore" is my favorite Pulp record, t/t is epic, so I'd say it's definitely worth a try. But for me it's also way superior to anything VW ever did.

There is so much bad between heaps ofoutstanding moments, no idea what to think about this yet. Def. not a classic 5 though.

His 'n' Hers is my favourite Pulp marginally ahead of Different Class; the thick English suburban atmosphere that inhabits it is just so seductively evocative.
This is Hardcore is pretty great too - maybe just a few too many unmemorable songs?
Weird way to link VW and Pulp though (privilege vs working class suburbia)... Both Jarvis and Ezra share an ability to write intelligent lyrics with humour, but Pulp have a savage edge VW lack. I actually think VW and The Divine Comedy are closer in DNA - especially with all the literary allusions.

Hah I was mostly linking Ezra to the girl Jarvis sings about in Common People, based on what was posted on the last page

I like it a lot, but it feels like the strings are the main attraction. Also I hope you understand that the line between most of these tracks is razor thin for me. Any given day, a new one could grab me just the right way.

Biggest grower for me so far has probably been Pravda. Song feels like it was lifted from Graceland or something. Fucking gorgeous.

Pravda is interesting, love the lyrics, my first language (Bosnian) is so similar to Russian
Pravi, upravu, usually means “right”
Tho not “truth” exactly that would be istina

The Surfer is the best song here even tho Mary Boone is my fave

That moment where Mary Boone transitions into that beat just melts me every time

This Is Hardcore is their second best album imo, but at the same time the song itself is my favourite song from Pulp

Yeah Sowing, those fucking piano runs in the second half of the song are euphoric
I honestly think the keys/synth is secretly MVP of this album

The Surfer has a kind of trip-hop feel to it. Probably one of my least favourite songs here (but still ace).
Feel like I'll hear it in exactly the right mood any day now and it'll just land perfectly.

People have been hyping this band around me for years but I haven't hopped on the train yet. Might do so with this, since it's been getting good press.
