“Tbf I've never been balls deep on panopticon, nothing higher than a 3.5”
I actually mostly agree To be honest. This one was a cut above for me

I’ll never get those 75 minutes back. Ah well.
I mean there are moments here perhaps, but my god this is stuffed with superfluousness. The intro is the worst offender, simply because the first transition into black metal is poorly executed and as pretty(ish - unremarkable but pleasant) as the folk part is, it deserved a more satisfying accompaniment

Closer is a raise on the rest and worth a full listen, but yeah the bm sections on this are a mixed bag (and that first transition still hurts me)

It was always gonna be tough to win me back after that, I won’t lie.
It’s not beyond redemption on the whole so I’ll give it another once over at some point (time dependent)

>You guys should read his interview in Decibel
why? is Decibel or other print mag worth a subscription these days? might be a good xmas gift
They are certainly worth it! Give me one reason not to subscribe to physical media that's actually worth reading?

I would argue that superfluousness as a negative is subjective. There are plenty of parts on this where if I'm not in the mood for this kind of thing I could easily argue they drag unnecessarily long but if I'm listening to this it's because I want that, and I don't think for something in this vein it's all that egregious with it.
I'll give you the poorly executed transition though, it was an eyebrow raiser the first time and has been a standout weak moment on my subsequent couple of listens. Not enough to mar what is largely a very pleasant listen for me tho.

The idea of superfluousness in general is subjective, so I wouldn't disagree with that. There's plenty of music I enjoy that has elongated or repetitive passages / songs that could easily be labelled as unnecessary, excessive or downright indulgent

yeah this is decent, feeling a solid 3.5 on this one. wouldn't choose to revisit this over some of his other stuff and id rather explore his bluegrass stuff further but i appreciate this a lot.

Haven't said much this week about this record but its still the best of the year by far. I am probably twenty+ full listens into this at this point and it is not falling off. If anything I am discovering more about it every time.

Black metal-influenced stuff is hit or miss for me but this really, really hits. Feels like every few years I really dig one random BM album (like Mare Cognitum a while back) and this is the one for 2023

Album dropped too late in the year for most year end lists, but it deserves to be in there.
A lot more than fucking Metallica or whatever shit these publications foist upon the gullible.

‘A lot more than fucking Metallica or whatever shit these publications foist upon the gullible.’
why highlight either?
I did try again and I’m not feeling this, surprisingly limp and uninteresting for how potentially grandiose the style can be.

I was initally taken by this because a lot it is quite pretty but not sure how convinced i am on the songwriting on repeated listens
None of the sections have really stuck to me (on my 5th listen or so) or have had any lasting impact
