"Too much cheerleader vocal repeating same phrase for ten minutes for me"
This^. Impossible Soul is an absolutely fucking garbage song after about the 10 min mark, right up until the last two or so minutes, which are awesome and hearken back to Futile Devices, which I thought was a really nice touch.
I wouldn't say I'm in love with Adz - I actually think All Delighted People slaps the shit out of it, despite the "rock version" of the title track being a totally unnecessary inclusion. Kind of frustrating that it's not a more talked about release in his discog, it has some of his best songs imo.
Any take regarding Illinois being like, insincere or bloated or obnoxious is just something I can't even objectively see, it just makes no sense to me; I think it has some of his most genuine and heartfelt songwriting ever

"I'm a sucker for him in this form, I rate the two main tunes from the 'Mystery of Love' soundtrack as both 5 out of 5 classics and again this is somewhat similar."
I gotta check this! Also happy to say I'm enjoying this far, FAR more today. I listened to 8 albums yesterday so I was probably just super fatigued by the time I got to this. It's gonna take a few more spins I think to rly set in but I can already feel it growing

It feels weird that this is technically only the second “mainline” Sufjan album since C&L. He’s definitely an unusual artist given how many collaborations/side projects he does. Ironically I never even checked The Ascension.

C&L, C&L live, and Planetarium are by far my favorites of all his stuff since the excellent Michigan-SS-Illinois trifecta. Ascension is easily his weakest main release, tho I haven't heard his first two, or Reflections.

I’d rate Michigan more a 3.5 but it’s not my favourite either
Gyro - the two songs on that soundtrack are ‘Mystery of Love’ and ‘Visions of Gideon’

I thought I would when Illinoise came out. Bought it on CD and thought it was alright. Haven’t heard anything since.
