Agreed. I don't mind Janelle doing an Afrobeat/reggae album as long as it's done well... I just don't enjoy the execution here

I think the dancehall elements might be the thing the most offputting to the average sputter but I personally love dancehall influence in pop

I think the worst part of this is Janelle herself, as much as i don’t want to say it. In this, what is Janelle and not basic pop cliche that she put on like aw well-worn coat?

Ok fair but people enjoy dua lipa and she’s the epitome of an industry coat hanger so

I guess the difference is this feels self-styled that way which seems disingenuous and plastic while dua lipa seems to have an authentic enjoyment in it

Agreed, i think it just comes down to how the overall end result feels to the listener. There are things to like here, for me, but i just find myself overall bored by her herself.
