You guys act like this isn’t littered with melodies and guitar lines and percussion that is very TMV. The thing that’s the most different is the absence of wild ass keys, but no ikey so

I didn't say TMV isn't prog, I said this album isn't.

What guitar lines? All I hear is breathy pop melodies scattered over three minute tunes

They didn't "experiment". This is a tried and true style and delivery that gets artists easy cash flow. It's dishonest. Saying they experimenting is simply falling into the trap they laid

You must not have listened to many more mellow Mars Volta tracks if you don’t think it atmospherically sounds like TMV

“ honey i hate to break this to you, but if this band wanted to cash in, they'd easily be better advised to drop Bedlam II and pander to the pushover jankprog faction of their fanbase so severely butthurt that their favourite gimmick band now records inoffensive everyone-music. they're one of the v few 00s prog bands successful enough to get away with that or with coming back as a cash bow legacy act, and if you're caught the wrong end of the middle finger they've raised at both those options, then you can at least respect the force of the gesture. no-one in their right mind would pull this record in the band's shoes with dollar signs in their eyes”

Right on target here, Johnny.

don’t get some of you guys. It’s obviously not a rock or prog record, but this band have always changed their style, with every single album they put out. I don’t get why some of you are surprised by this. Is it their worst album? Yes. Is it terrible? No. I was expecting a trove of 2.5s for this at worst, but people are seriously bent out of shape by this album haha

It’s inoffensive pop, man.

No it’s offensive pop

I’m offended with how bad this is

Probably worst Cedric/Omar related release of all time

explain how it's offensive pop?

it's not even like it's a pop album that follows contemporary trends, with out of place guest spots for name recognition; it's a pop album made to sound like it was done in the 70s, so there's not a lot of appeal for mainstream audiences. it's just TMV doing pop, and that's about the top and bottom of it. a disappointment in some ways, but you can't say they don't try new things. that's what i've always liked about the band.

gonzo is right, thou. in comparison to contemporary mainstream pop, this record is 'good' pop. actually the production on this is quite interesting. i like they tried a new path for the band, instead of replicating their prog sound just for the TMV fanbase. artists change, it's been 10 years since the last TMV record, so naturally, they grow up into new things. artists that do the same thing over and over again are really boring, but it's a safe bet since fanbases don't usually enjoy different things.

for me, it just needs more psychedelic to be good pop.

Yeah, the second half of this record is pretty solid imo. No case gain is the only track I’ll skip here, because that track is legit bad

If this had more stuff like Graveyard Love and Equus 3, I'd enjoy it more but the more balladic stuff is pretty laughable tbh

You do make a good point and I can come to terms with most of what you pointed out. I think my qualms with this release are that I wasn't expecting Deloused part two (that would be silly of me), but I was expecting a more honest effort and interesting approach than just a handful of of tunes that are just pretty bad compared to everything else in their catalog regardless of the style.
