This has infinitely more satisfying replay value than the latest Imperial Triumphant. I mean you could argue they’re going for different sides of the disso-progressive-whatever-metal formula (and I would), but the prominence of jazz influences and the world-crumbling atmosphere / aesthetic is certainly an interesting comparison point.
And I was majorly hyped about IT going in, unless that was part of the problem? Idk this feels more cohesive, unique, and ultimately more rewarding 🤔
easily in my top 10 for this year.

I *do* find this superior to IT, and while both bands are similar, I'd say the execution is somewhat different. This aims to be much more accessible, whereas IT's modus operandi is bending songwriting to where it's quite nearly nonsensical. Both are thrilling, but how Ashenspire can take so much and make it cohesive and technically complex is what makes it better. That and the vocal performance, which adds a uniquely hardcore touch as opposed to standard bm/dm vocals.

for clarification, I was only referencing this year’s IT. Alphaville was absolutely incredible and has tons of replay value.

Opener here goes crazy

One of the most interesting (metal, or otherwise) albums released this year I reckon, the opener does indeed go unfathomably hard...
I do like the quieter moments though, nice balance
