the riff comparison is definitely being exaggerated by some

Definitely improves on successive listens (like most other PT/SW albums). Harridan is probably my least favourite track, but I love Dignity, Chimera's Wreck and Never Have.

Agreed that this only gets better with additional listens. It's hard to choose favorites because the album is quite consistent, but if I had to pick one right now it'd probably be Chimera's Wreck.

I haven't listened to SW/PT since high school and maaaaan this is so good. It just feels awesome

Definitely has some gems, but it doesn't touch Fear of a Blank Planet or In Absentia for me. Still solid though.

Not even Gavin Harrison can make this interesting.

This album is so dry

Have not come back to this once; will change at some point soon, but there's a real choreishness hanging over it and *I wonder why*
Vaguely remember Barbieri's contributions being the most consistently engaging by a decent margin

I don't see myself returning to this soon either. It's just not engaging to me

Yeah there’s a small handful of tunes on this that i feel, they’re mostly ballad leaning songs that remind me of the best stuff off deadwing and stupid dream. Rest of it is way forgettable, technically competent tunes with zero character, Steven waxing poetic about everything and nothing…
Can’t even call this disappointing as i didn’t have high expectations but I’m totally bewildered by the high ratings. Listenable fluff

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of the similarities between the main motifs of Dignity and Interstate Love Song. It was something I caught instantly, and I could never unhear it after that... still, Dignity's my favorite song on here so far. Beautiful stuff

why are the bonus tracks so expensive to find physically if you can just open Spotify and find them there?

I just realized that the last three songs are bonus tracks lmao. They should just be part of the regular album, they comprise some of the best material here.

Porcupine/Tree Crystal/Clear production, amirite?
I don't connect with the riffs nearly as much as i should. The mellow elements are the meat, atleast in my opinion. Everything else has been done before or simply put in a different context.

On another note, i'm getting some proper 80's vibes due to how the instruments feel in the mix and the touch of the tonewoods and stuff.

Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed at how natural all the time signature changes sound on Of the New Day, given how many there are for such a mellow track

This has so many cool moments; but severely lacks Colin's basslines

Colin’s great but Stevens bass playing is on fire here i.e. Harridan.
