Rise still goes the hardest on this. lots of floppers on this but I knew Rise was gonna be the highlight when it was released as a single

Josh and Zach are actually doing some great playing, as always

I decided to give this a listen and it’s the first coheed album I straight-up dislike. I’m not into the band’s style generally at this point in my life, but no matter which way I look at it, this is just not good

I love Zack, but I'd have liked to hear how they would've sounded if Mic still played bass for them. His aggressive/unpredictable play style was a core element in why Coheed slapped hard for me. Especially in the proggier stuff on Good Apollo 1. Zack's got the grooves (which work extremely well with Josh's drumming) but Mic stood out against the other members. That being said I don't support what he did, it's a shame he went off the rails.

Mic is my favorite bass player ever and his sound is missing so hard from the band. He has/had such a unique playing style that I wouldn't expect Zack to replicate but I constantly wonder if their sound would be such straightforward rock if Mic never fucked his life up.

Yeah, makes me sad watching old live vids of Coheed and seeing how much passion Mic put into his bass playing. Always seemed to shine through even over the top of Claudio's/Travis's awesome guitar work. There's an old video of one of the Willing Well's played live (Neverender DVD I think) and Mic's bass riffs were so chaotic and powerful, never saw anything like it in my life.

I think my favorite of Mic's is still Time Consumer. I prefer the pre-re-issue of SSTB because the bass is obscenely high in the mix and it makes the songs sound so damn good and Mic really gets to shine on the whole album.

think I pinpointed that my main issue with this album is just that it feels really lacking in the full band chemistry. apparently this is functionally just the band overdubbing on Claudio's demos, which makes sense in real world problem scenarios, but it contributes to the feeling that some of this is just Prize Fighter Inferno demos with the other guys thrown on top lmao
or in the case of Our Love literally just feels like a b-side from City Introvert

^ Band's been like this since TCBTS, where it's mostly just Claudio creating the outline and the band fills in.
I would have loved to hear the band push more of their acoustic/folk sound they dabbled with on Afterman: Ascension, or have more influence from Davenport Cabinet (Travis' band). Right now the Coheed is definitely more Prize Fighter Inferno/electronic influenced, which is not bad, but Coheed sounds better as a more rock-oriented band imo

Definitely could have used more ROCK. The acoustic/folk sound would have been nice too. Despite this, the album is still great as it is, even if its more of a fully realized electro-influenced Claudio album than it is a Coheed album.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the band has essentially always been Claudio doing almost all of the writing?
Would love to see the band open up their writing process on the next one, but definitely makes sense why this one ended up being so Claudio focused and Prize Fighter-ish with lockdown and whatnot. I really hope it doesn't take four years for the next album to drop, this one was supposedly pretty much ready to go last year when Shoulders dropped, but was delayed due to all of the supply chain issues and whatnot

"but was delayed due to all of the supply chain issues and whatnot"
Yeah, Spotify's servers have been really slow to upload new tunes due to covid

They delayed the album because of the boxset having supply chain issues. Idk if it was legit delayed from last year but it's why it got pushed back another month this year.
I'll +1 to the acoustic/folk stuff from Ascension. Subtraction, Homecoming, and Evagria are such great songs. I'd kill for more like Subtraction.
