Liberal civility that treats every word that is used as a slur like Voldemort helps nobody. Not saying everyone should flippantly go around saying f-bombs and n-bombs, but to pretend that there aren't contexts where you can say them devoid of hate is putting the cart before the horse and is merely putting a band-aid on much deeper bigotry.

Using these words casually or as epithets is obviously not cool and should never be used by people who are not in those in-groups, but in art or historical contexts, among others, they can be used to provoke or be more precise rather than whitewash. Intent is important and there are certainly plenty of words and phrases that are not slurs that can be manipulated to function as such. Language is a complex, ever-evolving thing that is chameleon-like with context and mediums, not really something that should be treated so black and white. I'm a straight white cis dude so you can certainly disagree with me that Kendrick had the right to use the word here, but regardless of that I would hope that we could both agree that there is a massive difference between how he used it in "Auntie Diaries" and, say, Eminem using it as an insult against Tyler the Creator. I'm glad the song has provoked as much discussion as it has at this moment. I operate in pretty left-leaning circles online and I've certainly seen some people against it, but it's mostly from people purporting themselves to be allies -though there are certainly LBGT people against it. For what it's worth, the day after this album dropped a gay friend of mine who isn't super into music texted saying that she wasn't finished with the album yet, but that "Auntie Diaries" made her really emotional and was something she was really happy that someone as big as Kendrick put out. In the same way that it's not my place to use these words, it's also not my place to get offended for these groups -outright bigotry obviously excluded, but I think we are all smart and mature enough to recognize that's not what's going on here. It's still okay to disagree with his usage, but I think it's important to both interrogate why he used it and why you feel it's either okay or not okay. When someone says "Trans Rights", the more important thing is to build a coalition of potentially imperfect allies with the hope that they can continue their personal growth, than turn them away.

TL;DR: straight white cis boi gives Kendrick the f pass

@mrsrlord

I wasn’t talking to you though?

In any case one gay man’s opinion obviously isn’t indicative of them all and I choose to respect the many that that very much appreciate that word being abolished from my vocab.

Shockingly, many not being American either

This isn’t even about auntie diaries, storm altered the context substantially with that braindead comment

Mostly agree with odal about auntie diaries though feel that choices like including Kodak on the album and deadnaming and misgendering the entire track undermine his good intentions, regardless of what his explanation might be

So do I and yeah I agree on Storm being too blunt on a topic that's certainly too controversial to be handled that way. It just kind of messed with me that people went down to insults before trying to debate on it. Hope this helps to clear the issue a bit

As for my vision of it, I mostly agree with what Odal said

Lol yeah you're right on that. I suppose Sinternet's constant bantering against prog struck a chord with me

my initial comment wasn't supposed to be smart, it was an admittedly lazy stab at censorship, language softening and people policing each other

now I'm not saying people should start calling each other faggots again, I'm saying if we're discussing a song, we should be able to #1 WRITE and #2 SAY the thing the fucking artist said in the context in which he said it and observe why he did it rather than censoring the fuck out of everything and stopping discourse from being had

and I really had no intention of insulting anyone other than the culture, so sorry to everyone who took it personally
