I'm not a musician, so I can't really comment on production or sound quality in any serious way, but on first listen the impression for me was "well the songs are there (for the most part), but it all just sounds a bit WEIRD".

You don't have to be a musician to comment on production or sound quality. Most musicians don't know anything about sound quality as evidenced by all of the overly compressed albums these days.

robot song isnt bad it just has a boring chorus which is a death sentence for a song that bland and intentionally direct

I like the big messy walls. Like that drop in the opener is pretty fkin dope despite not every instrument being crystal clear

PUPs always had this garage rock band charm that I felt was missing on MS, but it’s back here.

"PUPs always had this garage rock band charm that I felt was missing on MS, but it’s back here."
I suppose this is a fair point. This and MS just have a more poppy sound generally than their original couple albums so I felt like it made sense to drop the fuzz on their last album and that its largely unnecessary here.

I think I interpreted what they said differently and agree with you both! I definitely think this is poppier than MS, BUT at the same time, they brought back the fuzzy, garage rocky production that they left out for the pristine sound on MS.

After some more listening I've actually basically come around the appreciating the production on the whole. I think it tips the scales a little into "too much" oftentimes but it also kinda started working for me in regards to the theme of a band falling apart, which is pretty much what it sounds like. It was actually "Cutting Off the Corners" that made me 'get' what they may have been trying to do.
I do still wish the drums were engineered differently.

For me this is their strongest release, and I'm really surprised by it. That little dash of muddy psych is precisely what they needed.

It helped me, I felt that way when I was listening to Habits
additional edit: I think Habits has the most dissonant instruments, so I'm not a huge fan of this song, but I do get the impression now that it gives the impression that the band is unstable.
