FFS its not like Ghost were ever a band that wrote complex sophisticated and much heavier tunes than are on this one, some people talk like they were tool or animals as leaders and have now become Nickleback or something.
Its a minor shift to a slightly more arena rock accessible sound, but its still Ghost, it feels like such a logical completely understandable next move, Prequelle was themed on black plague etc so was naturally darker, but i really applaud them bringing this new angle to their sound.
I think what often happens is when someone likes a band and really own them like, "they are one of my bands", if that band goes more accessible and the risk is they will have now a shit load more fans, that ownership of the band becomes threatened - "I don't want to like this band if every teeny bopper is going to start liking them" etc - Thats the fear, that's what is going on here clear as day for so many.
But it overlooks what this product is, its a great album.

I don’t care that they’re pop I care that they’re regurgitating boring 80s worship

I really like poppy Ghost but yeah, this one's soulless and boring. Helvetesfönster has more ideas than the entirety of Impera.

Weird, Helvetesfönster is easily my least favorite track on Prequelle

Ok I'm warming up to this one slowly. Will see how far it gets over the next few months with a few more spins.
Not the successor to Prequelle that I wanted, but I think I definitely prefer modern-day Ghost to their first three albums.

Yeah I've gone from 2.5 to 3.5 on this. Stupid sexy 80s.

“I feel that. As well as your Emeriti-ship.”
It makes me feel weirdly old somehow
“ Its a minor shift to a slightly more arena rock accessible sound, but its still Ghost, it feels like such a logical completely understandable next move,”
Agreed that it feels natural, I’m just not sure they haven’t gone too far in this direction. Time will tell, some of those songs are stuck in my head all day now and they’re growing on me.

This album was a bit different for me from the rest of the discog because the vast majority of tracks continue to get better with time, whereas on past albums the songs grow off you gradually. I couldn’t tell you what’s leading to that but I do find myself enjoying it more on each listen

Album still sounding great, I listened to the discog in reverse the other day and enjoyed the steady decline into darker territory by the time I hit Opus.
It's a fun ride going the other way too, I don't hate the direction but can't help but want something "spookier" on the next one. The band have only been around for 12 years (in terms of major releases) so there's still plenty of records ahead.
This one might have the best cover art as well, would be interesting to hear the consensus as they've not had a bad cover yet.

My take on the past few Ghost albums is that their first 4-5 songs are all absolute solid jams. What differentiates the albums is their back half.
- Meliora might be their best album. Incredible top half, followed by solid songs in the back. It’s capped by Deus in Absentia, which is my hands down favorite Ghost song.
- Prequelle is a bit more consistent. I like all the songs and there are a few standouts early in the album.
- Impera has some amazing jams in the first half, and although the back half has some filler interludes the rest of the tracks are fantastic. On the whole it’s not as good as the previous two, but the first half is extremely strong. On another note, I feel like the album would be much better without “Twenties’” lyrics, which I find to be pretty stupid. I love the song’s melody, but can’t stand the lyrics, so to me it’s a weird speedbump in my listen.

Meliora is front to back perfect imo. Majesty is the only sort of weak song.
