The songwriting is unbearably archetypal. The Hardest Cut bastardizes Beefheart in a way only Franz Ferdinand could

Britt Daniel is, like, the definition of cool as far as I’m concerned.

yh idk, the performances our good and the songwriting is fine (though mostly v means-to-an-end and kinda dull) but almost everything remotely **groovy** or bluesy about this record (most of it) sounds big time deja vu. not sure they do anything to make it their own or that their voxman has much going for him, so there's the awk feeling that they come off a whole less smooth n slick n cool indieindifferent sexy as this roundspecs type beat should
so basically excellent renditions of middle-of-the-road indie playlist fodder. probs a 3 but it's enjoyable so maybe higher

fosho, will check next month when every band in existence is done bombing me with their shiny new shit
vibing this more on 2.5th spin, think their singer is the main root for all my gripes; band are gud. TD&MJ thru My Babe is a sweet run and the closer hits the spot a treat

Spoon will forever be that band where every single album is solidly "good". This is still right in line with expectations, but I def prefer both of their last 2 LPs.

I love most of Spoon's past output but this album doesn't quite do it for me for some reason. It's all a bit too straight forward or pared back in composition or something. The only song I can say I enthusiastically enjoy is Held -- lo and behold it's a cover.

Last night's concert was fantastic. Played four songs from this album (Held, The Longest Cut, Wild, and My Babe) and they all held up real well.
