you slowly begin to realize that your 90s indie rock favourites are just a mirage of nostalgia. this is better in every way but you can't bring yourself to enjoy it because the circumstances just aren't right anymore. all you're left with is the cold realization that it was never the quality of the music that mattered... you don't say a word about it on this or any other thread. and then, the third listen...

europeans are just robots that are not programmed to feel emotions
until your second listen when a flicker of humanity arises within one for the first time ever... and then gets quickly washed down with some Slint and Kirin Ichiban Shibori. the others will never know

After the first four (incredible) tracks this winds down big time (except Swimming ofc)
But then again it wouldn’t be Pinegrove if it wasn’t half solid filler

'Swimming' is great and I am a big fan of 'Cyclone' but there are a couple of songs on the second half of the album that haven't won me over yet such as 'So What'.

It’s aight

It's the damn B11 on the chorus of 'Cyclone' that gets me - the transition from B to B11.
"I don't wan' i' aneeemoooore."
It's a good hook.

Btw Asleep this is a fantastic and dense review, ty for reminding me that reviews this short are good and allowed

'So What' has won me over, it is just 'Let', 'Orange' and '11th hour' that I think are just good
Also knowing that Leo and Patterson are his dogs (the song inspired by them is on Skylight), these lines are real tough if they mean what they sound like they mean:
"October 13th now with Leo gone
Paterson moves on, mm-hm"

the three-song run of Flora/Respirate/Let is for sure the album's low point

Orange is fantastic what
such a angry song, I love it

Orange is a bit slow and whiney for me and I don't think its climax is nearly high enough for the slog of a song it is. I wish I heard more anger in it.

‘God dammit this deserves at least a 3.9!!!! Please gods of sput’
I lowered it to a 3.7 earlier. I’m here to spread unbridled joy throughout these pastures.
This would at least be above average with a different (less whiney) vocalist and /or less refs to the current social climate.

Hush now, Evans vox are perfect for the instrumentals and vibe of this. Nothing whiney about his delivery in the slightest, to my ears.
