'There are so many parts of the songs here that I adore. The last minute and a half of "The Spaces in Between" blew my mind. This guy's clearly talented, but in my opinion there's little reason some of these songs should hover around the ten minute mark. The album's bloated to a fault.'

This is the equivalent of someone saying "why does every drum n bass song have a drop, a break, another drop, and are 6 - 10 minutes long"

Effectively it is the accepted style of the genre - slowcore stuff like this, whether by Kozelek, or Low, or whoever...the songs are usually loooooong. It is what it is, I wouldn't blame this band for sticking to the conventional wisdom of everyone who writes in this style :/

You are simply not a sucker for the genre.

even by the standards of early Low and RHP, this has remarkably little development
which is obviously not the point yes
but it is what it is

Dunno, I think Kozelek classics like 'Cruiser' or 'Drop' by RHP and they are 100% the same level of development and they are also perfect for that

Think they call it atmos chill and mesmeric guvnor complete with hearty emotional tugs

The idea of employing the grubby mitts of sput users to produce a 'radio edit' of this here masterpiece is not cool. Not cool at all.

I’d say most of these have a bit less progression than your average long Kozelek track, even if he just tends to vary the guitar phrasing a bit more or does a solo. And idk if I’d say this is “the” accepted style of the genre so much as “an” accepted style, plenty of slowcore acts keep most of their songs in a 3-5 minute range, granted with a couple longer song or two thrown in there somewhere being pretty common, but the average track length here is definitely still solidly above average in the genre.

Well, I agree with all that - and also I'd welcome a couple more short songs in the style of 'Colours' and the closer...but then you check RYM track ratings and comments here and they are the least loved tunes.

I'm really happy with this album, I wouldn't change much if anything I guess.

there's little progression, but that's not something i expect out of slowcore... it's more of a post-rock thing.

I think the accents, little flourishes and small little moments on every track is what makes them enjoyable against the simplistic, droning background.

matter of taste and genre convention, i guess

Album is perfect for relaxing after a long day at work. Maybe a little too perfect. I keep falling asleep when meaning to be conscious for the runtime lol

Yeah this is definitely sleepy music

I could probably never intently listen to this but if I'm in the kitchen cooking and I just want warm cozy kitchen vibes then this is the shit

I dunno, think I'm the opposite - if I don't emotionally connect on a listen this doesn't do too much for me as 'background listening' other than sounding nice

Quite like a concentrated headphones listen with this one, esp in darkness

Yup, I’ve already had some great moments listening very closely to this one. Does work as background too though.

Behind My Eyes is so amazing, reminds me of RHP's Katy Song in terms of how it hits me

I've mostly been jamming this while working or just at random times throughout the day, I think it works well as background music but periodically sucks me in and makes me pay attention. This would be nice as a bedtime listen but actually haven't tried that yet.

This album is truly beautiful. I have to make my mind about the final score but it's a 4 minimum. Sadcore always hits deep man... The feels in here are profound and very real. It reminds me of a slower, emotional version of R.E.M
