I’m not hearing anything wrong with the mix personally but don’t have a problem with anyone who does. Still need to fully digest the album but it’s growing on me. All I know for sure is the final two tracks closing the album are epic and stand up to what I consider classic Mastodon which is Leviathan and Blood Mountain

Everyone complaining about the length needs to treat it like the double album it is.
Throw on disc one, headbang. Make some scones or something then come back to disc two.

"It doesn't get much better than this."
What does that even mean? In music? In metal? For this band?

Ya back to back it's a bit much, pushing the tides was a good place to cleave it in two I think

Clearly their best album since Crack The Skye, and I´m inclined to consider it the 2nd best in their discog exactly after CTS. Maybe it´s a bit overstretched and could do without a couple of tracks, but I can´t help but admire the incredible musicianship, and willingness to risk and try different things from these guys, which has been a constant throughout their careers.
I have to admit that my opinion might be influenced by the fact that I´m connecting with the themes of the record very deeply because I´m more or less the same age as them, and I´ve grown alongside this band. A lot of this hits very close to home, even down to the fact that I lost an aunt 2 days before this record came out, which was just 9 years older than me. So there´s definitely not a lot of objectivity here.

What I meant was that I'm really enjoying this. The feeling I get from it and the excitement of coming back to it again and again is hard to beat. It doesn't get much better than this, objectively/ subjectively/ however

pretty sure whatever overlong riff album with selective attention to mainstream song structures and a handful of spooky arps comes out next week will a good chance of beating this y'all need to get that junk out of your veins

Damn dude. Big luv. I went to my grand ma s funeral in the same day I went alone to see Mastodon. Emperor of Sand was out that month. They connect this way they do.
Your case is a little more delicate. Sending super strenght from here.

One thing is for sure. As I am jamming this I have to say Mastodon has never sounded this mature. Also every track here is rock solid, each one has it's own thing going. Maybe there's no star track here but there are no leftovers here either imho. I'm enjoying this album with repeated listens with its flaws and everything. I guess we can say this is metal for the middle aged man.
