"do y'all know how comparisons actually work or do you just type words in random orders"
Everyone knows you can only compare music to the previous record of the same artist and drawing wider artistic connotations is actually poser shit

"I personally think this Injury Reserve album is a lot more interesting than Dance Gavin Dance's 2006 opus Downtown Battle Mountain"

I'm comparing 2 progressive hip-hop albums that came out in the timespan of a month my guy, go untie your knickers

The Simz record is very traditional though, that's where our objection comes from.

If there is one word I wouldn't use to describe Sometimes I Might Be Introvert it's traditional

I love that album, but nothing on it strays outside hip-hop convention or pushes boundaries. It doesn't need to, an album can be fantastic anyhow.

Imo she builds just as much on the already existing conventions of neo-soul, West-African music and spoken word to build a record as Injury Reserve do here building on the industrial and alternative conventions of El-P and Kenny Segal (though admittedly these dudes push it further)

as someone who has scarcely listened to hip-hop for like 10 yrs until, like, last month, the new Simz is a 100x more familiar experience than this, not rly for better or worse
not sure this comparison does either artist a service

I get what you're saying but easy on the ears is hardly the same thing for me as being traditional

Then what are you saying?
|
| |
familiar = easy to identify within hip-hop (or other) tropes
like, SIMBI is a good and i think it's often to its credit that its Epic/orch leanings tie into frankness, but it's v straightforward in what it's about and how that's expressed
and this, uh, ain't. cool !

Maybe having listened to a shitton of Billy Woods, Milo and Quelle Chris over the last few years has warped my brain but this was way easier for me to connect with than SIMBI was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
