You can find the lyrics on this album by any other mainstream hardcore/post-hardcore band. He doesn't address anywhere near the sort of issues he does later on, he doesn't experiment with characters etc etc. I mean, it's a start and he improved on it, but it doesn't mean its anywhere near good. As for the guitar and bass...maybe I need to listen to it again. The lyrics and singing just threw me off so much the first few times.

Honestly, I didn't really like this at first, either. I was thrown off by the comparatively poor production value and was like "DOESN'T SOUND LIKE NEW THRICE, DO NOT LIKE."
Then I stopped being an idiot and figured out this rules anyway.

You have to admit sometimes the lyrics are great and sometimes they are kinda bad or they seem as if Dustin was trying to hard.
"And down below I see my crew they look okay"
"I saw you killing Aristotle, but I know it's all part of the plan"(I think this may be a metaphor on science represented by Aristotle).
But saying the lyrics of the whole album are bad is pretty much wrong if you ask me.

The majority. I mean, there are a few gems spread throughout, but overall they're forgettable. Iono, maybe with more listens I'll like it more.

how could you possibly say it doesn't sound like thrice? wtf is wrong with you? also the album is easily on par with artist. and holy shit i've just realised how you're even more wrong because you think artist is better than vheissu when that's actually their best not gonna lie you cant disagree because with your comments you've already declared yourself a fuckwit!

there's plenty of technicality here; this album was made well before thrice stopped putting so much emphasis on riffs. and to the guy that asked if thrice is a christian band, they're not, but some of the members are christians, including dustin who writes their often christian-like lyrics.

IAmInsect, note I said I can't comment on technicality.
And gaslightanthem...well, read over your post. I think most people would agree you're the fuckwit here, whether or not my opinion on this album is 'wrong'.

arguably thrice's most popular release and somehow this 'doesn't sound like thrice' just strikes me as pretty odd

It doesn't sound like latter Thrice, which is the Thrice I first got into and liked. It's not hard to get. I just don't like it. You can go get a rib removed and suck your own dick if you've got a problem with that.

Whoops, kinda used to only guys on this site. Either way, my comment stands but remove dick and place vagina...and remove suck and replace with lick. There you go! But yeah, seriously. Enough.

To Awake And Avenge The Dead is sooo good.
As other people have said, it reminds me of PTH. End breakdown section is fantastic.

Thrice's post-hardcore stuff is so much better than their newer bullshit. And The Artist In The Ambulance is their best album bleak.
