I prefer this over their last 2 albums easily, this is way more focused and well written

Better production does help a lot. First album would bump by at least half a point if it had this production. Second sounds better but the weak drum sound also doesn't help.

I do get the sentiment that the focus these songs have makes them a bit less exciting and therefore feel like more of a collection of singles.

Production is 90% of the time based on available budget, I don“t blame a new metal band having less than stellar prod.

Oh I really disagree with that. My band's first album I'd argue sounds better (really different production for sure but still my point stands) than VOLA' first album and it cost 6000$ for the recording/mix/master.

When the gear used reaches a certain level it's more about the knowledge of how to make things sound good and the decisions made during the process. Also Metallica has infinite amounts of money and their albums sound like shit haha.

Maybe your point was true 20 years ago, but to me the drum sound on Inmazes could've easily been better and I hate that it kinda ruins my enjoyment of a great album.

Inmazes? I thought Applause was the one that suffered from weak drum production.

Applause had so much (and many) more memorable songs imo. Only 24 light-years comes closes to Alien Shivers, Ruby Pool, T/T, We Are Thin Air, and Ghosts for me. They are all good songs, but Applause had something much more special for me.

Applause has stronger highs for sure. This is so full of earworms and fantastic production though

@SitarHero

Both suffer greatly from their poor drum sound. I was referring to Inmazes specifically to prove my point since it was the first therefore maybe the cheapest to produce. I hate both drum sounds about as much for kinda opposite reasons haha.
