So on first spin this is...fine? It didn’t do anything really to change my previous impression that this band is more background material than anything. Maybe after a few more spins when I stop playing “identify the influence” (yes, lots of Fleet Foxes, though I also hear a lot of Calexico and My Morning Jacket; really just the early ‘10s indie folk/Americana scene in general) on every song and appreciate them more for that they are it will grow.

Low key think “Time’s Blur” might be the best here for what it is even though it feels completely unnecessary tacked onto an already 45 minute album with a solid closer in “What Do It Mean”. At the very least it’s the most effortlessly evocative thing here.

Great review and incredible album. It's been a long time since an indie folk release has held my attention like this.

It sounds very much like Fleet Foxes

I dunno tbh, it's just that ever so slightly bubbly/bright bucolic golden dusk kinda vibe nahmean

Most of this sounds like the exact midpoint between Fleet Foxes and Calexico as I said on the previous page, especially insofar as the songwriting didn’t stand out so much as the general vibe so far. Not that that’s a bad thing per se I think it just needs some time to settle before I can enjoy it for what it is.

I actually feel like Fleet Foxes has enough subtleties to be pretty unique within the realm of indie folk, unpredictable song structures, classical influences, verbose lyricism. Sounds like I'm describing The Decemberists lol but yeah I feel FF are relatively distinct. This really does give me a similar "vibe" to FF first 2 albums tho

Yeah when I’m saying sounds like Fleet Foxes I’m usually thinking the self-titled/Sun Giant sound that was so influential on early-10s indie folk/Americana, not the progressive stuff.

The “old Western” vibe is in the Calexico influence (or similarity at least) I’m hearing.

Okay yeah that is a fair point

You’d dig I think, their newer stuff is much more conventionally songful like this but their older material is a really neat mix of typical songs and instrumental, Western soundtrack-esque stuff.

Fleet Foxes are obnoxiously twee tho and their vocalist makes me want to turn off every song

Obviously though this is a super popular band (way more so than I thought) so I’m probably selling them short by focusing on their influences/contemporaries since clearly they have their own unique appeal to many. Clearly originality isn’t what they’re going for anyways.

Fleet Foxes twee??? On their self-titled EP I guess but not after that.

@Colt, I kinda ninja’d you there, agree with your sentiment - I just think that coming as someone who typically enjoys stuff in this realm it can take some time to appreciate those more unique characteristics.
