So I have finally been getting into this over the past few weeks, and I am still having trouble absorbing it. This is some of the densest stuff I’ve ever heard and really requires full attention - it’s like listening to an audiobook. At this point most of it has connected with me, though I’m having a bit of a harder time unravelling “Only Skin” since that’s the longest, densest, and least direct of them all. But I think if I keep giving this more time it will fully connect.

Not yet. I checked Divers way back when it was released but never went deeper in her discog. Think I’m gonna do Milk-Eyed Mender next in a couple months (since RYM says that one’s pretty summery) then HOOM later in the year (since that one’s allegedly more autumnal). Plus that one’s even more intimidating than this one lol. Might approach that one disc by disc. But yeah I imagine all her stuff is mega up my alley. I mean Divers is already a near 5 and this one will probably land in a similar space soon enough.

even though it's obviously more intimidating just due to its sheer length, i think it's actually a lot more melodically straightforward/easy to grasp than this one. in some ways, it's her most accessible album really. to my ears it's also the one that's the most influenced by classic american music (folk, blues, even some vague country influences) which is part of the reason why i like it so much and why i think youll like it a lot. excited to hear your thoughts

Yeah well at least the average song length on HOOM is shorter. That’s the big challenge with this one, if my attention flags for a minute or two I lose track of the narrative/thematic throughline of a song.
If I have a major criticism of this it’s that some of the arrangements feel a bit extraneous. I read that Van Dyke Parks wrote and recorded the strings after the basic tracks were laid down and while they do complement the core harp/vocals well sometimes it’s a bit much/makes it even harder to focus. “Sawdust & Diamonds” def stands out for being a bit more bare than the rest and is a nice break midway.

I think Van Dyke does too much too yeah. Some of the swells etc on something like “Emily” bother me a bit

"The album was produced by Newsom and Van Dyke Parks, recorded by Steve Albini, mixed by Jim O'Rourke, with accompanying orchestral arrangements by Van Dyke Parks. It features guest vocals from Bill Callahan"
talk about an all star cast lmao i didnt even know any of these people were involved
