I honestly thought that music was supposed to be a journey, an experience and something that grows within you. I personally loved the album from start to finish. I applaud him for taking a shot and I applaud him for giving it a very 2000s feel. Its a tribute to nostalgia and a time when he felt amazing and hopeful about life. I know the feeling.

Bert McCracken on this is maybe one of the only redeeming qualities.

This doesn't surprise me, since Bloom MGK has made it clear he doesnt really care about hip hop anymore. However, i actually see some potential here, the key to whether this decision is artistic or just screwing around will depend on what happens after. If he does a pop punk album afterwards, it'll prove he's actually committed to genre, if he goes back to rap it'll prove he didn't give a shit and was just fucking around like Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, and Snoop were.

Travis nailed the fucking drums here, as usual, if MGK decides to do a follow up, it would behoove him to give Travis more creative control. Hell maybe he could do a collab with Blink?

This album is flawed af but I see a lot of potential here, he just needs to keep at it. Changing genres is hard and takes a lot of work and understanding of the genres mechanics. Unlike Bloom and everything after it, this is the first time in awhile he sounds like he gives a shit about music again.

I'm not a pop punk expert by any means (in fact I find it to be a pretty shitty genre by and large)... but like, I just don't really see what this thing is lacking that warrants all the low ratings?

I enjoy this about as much as any full-on pop punk album I can think of. Hooks galore, MGK has a decent voice and doesn't sound like a fucking pussy like most other pop punk vocalists, Barker lays down some nice drums, all the features are actually good and add to the record, very modern sounding... only thing that really brings the album down is the skits. Pop punk lyrics are pop punk lyrics.

Guess I just don't "get" the genre... but it also feels like yall are grading this on a different, much harsher scale because of who the artist is and how he just switched genres without "paying his dues" or something.

Heard Dream is Over before... good but there's way too much going on there to just call it a "pop punk" album in the same vein as this imo

I can sum it up with two words: no soul.

I mean, I can see the appeal for it if you love hearing vapid pop-punk that imitates the genre's tropes to an unhealthy degree, but it's not for me. Just look at that album cover, it say it all!

If nothing else, it shines light on the fans' standards. I don't want to come across like some sort of elitist asshole, or a pretentious boob, but this does absolutely nothing innovative. Like I've already touched on, it mirrors my feelings with Greta Van Fleet's awful plagiarism, which also gets lapped up in droves. Like Deth said there, it could well be accounted to the sore lack of active mainstream acts, but it does the genre no favours in the long run. Still, whatever floats your boat, man.

People on facebook are talking about how they had to pay fall out boy to have one of these songs on here because it basically lifted the guitar and bass from one of their tracks and then saying they love the song lmao

No soul [2] which has absolutely nothing to do with not "paying his dues" btw lmao any pop punk band could have dropped this and my feelings would be the same, outside of possibly having a better vocalist

I think his voice just doesn't mesh with the music either. I got use to it on "Forget Me Too", just bc I've heard it like 30 times by now (praise halsey ft). I then went back to the rest of the songs thinking, "oh maybe I can tolerate him now", but that was not the case lol. And the songs where he tries blending some hip hop in the music works as well as mixing oil and water.

It's a pop punk album with extra emphasis on the pop part... what else is it supposed to sound like if not this? Why does it need to be "innovative"? And of course this is gonna have a heavy blink influence when one of their members plays on the entire album and probably helped write all the songs.

"And the songs where he tries blending some hip hop in the music works as well as mixing oil and water."

Don't want to pull "that" card but this album wouldn't be anywhere near as big as it is if this we're actually the case. So many other successful artists from both genres have tried this only to completely embarrass themselves, while this album pulls it off seemlessly.

Like Blink 182 isn't good in the first place. "Not worse than other pop punk" is still pretty poor company. It's a trash genre barring a solid handful of exceptions. This is definitely no Tiger's Jaw lol.

It's not good though. Like this is where rock goes to die. I don't even like how the drums are produced. When it's just ham-fisting bad pop punk tropes on top of each other, it's bad. When it tries to mix pop rap elements into the tropes, it's heinous. But that's just my opinion too lol. If I'm listening to pop punk I'd rather some shit like Ivy League or Jawbreaker.
