let's hope Bob's output in his 80s is better than it was in the 80s

80s Dylan had a handful of absolute classic tunes so we're good

if his ratio in the 2020s is as bad as it was in the 80s (2/7) we are most certainly not good but I think he'll just continue doing these old man blues albums every few years so I'm not worried

I mean if someone had had the foresight to chuck together an 80s album of stuff he left off and discarded that decade... it like would be one of his greatest ever albums? Series of Dreams, Dignity, New Danville Girl, Blind Willie McTell, Caribbean Wind, Angelina? that's some fucking classic tier shit
that being said he did manage to get some classics on the actual albums, like Jokerman, Sweetheart, Dark Eyes, Brownsville Girl, Ring Them Bells (actually most of Oh Mercy is pretty great)

yeah I see your point, but if the price we have to pay to get songs of that quality is having to hear a Tight Connection To Your Heart-esque song from an 80 year old Dylan I would be pretty confident in saying it's not worth it

"Murder Most Foul" is still incredible bc it's 75% spot on elegy for America by one of its poets laureate but also 25% like aw grampy is telling us about the old days

Yeah, it's remarkable. Took me a long time to appreciate but it's at least borderline top 10 Bob Dylan songs for me, which is truly incredible given his discography. It really hit the spot in 2020 with the sense that the country was disintegrating right in front of my eyes, and still does, probably because that's still true.

Yeah weirdly I was ambivalent at the time (felt too on the nose) but revisited it after dabbling in the Oh Mercy/Time Out of Mind period and all of the sudden I'm like this is some of the greatest shit ever
|
| |
I saw a tweet that said it's kind of a skeleton key for his whole body of work which I think is pretty spot on

I can see it feeling too on the nose, kinda was my initial reaction as well.
The structure of it is just awesome, not something basically any other artist could/would attempt because it's simultaneously hugely ambitious and pretty mock-able if done by anyone without a legendary reputation
