you know what you're probably right cause strong melodies are mostly why she blew up like crazy a couple years ago

this could blow your mind: we're talking about the melodies being weak because we think the melodies are weak and we're trying to articulate why we're not digging this that much. you know, because it's a music discussion website
many of the songs on the first album have strong melodies. many of the songs on this don't. there's no hivemind conspiracy lmao

I definitely prefer Stranger In The Alps, and if you listen enough you can find things to like on Punisher. But the occasional pretty moments or instrumental experimentation on Punisher don’t make up for the melodies - even though melodies aren’t everything. I give SITA a 4.5 and Punisher a 3.5 based on what I heard.

@cormano the problem isn't *just* weak melodies, I actually think they're the icing on the cake of the homogenous dynamics, inadequacy as a production showcase and dubiously convincing lyrical tone - none of these individually is crippling (and Strangers mitigated some of the crossover flaws v well), but they don't spark joy together

I cannot stop listening to this despite being mildly let down. Strange combination of feelings lol.

Kinda get that. Can see it landing anywhere between a 2.5 and 5 for me, depending how it eventually hits. A lot of the pieces feel like they're there; think it's a really well written album.

I’m emotionally invested enough in this record that I keep refreshing these comments in between drinks even though I’m meant to be being social and not just humming the melody from Halloween to myself, even though that melody is you know, not memorable. I think it’s a 5 from me. But I respect everyone’s individual enjoyment or not of this lovely record

But that’s how every phoebe project has been for me, initially good if not a little underwhelming, then gradually permeating your idle moments until it’s cemented itself as the soundtrack to a whole segment of your life. Can’t say that for too many artists.

Not every album has to have pop-like melodies...
I think the atmosphere and production is fine without a bunch of songs that get stuck in your head

Don't think anyone's arguing that.

oh brother. who said they had to be pop-like? the chorus of "Smoke Signals" isn't poppy at all but it was so arresting when I first heard it that I replayed it like a dozen times in a row. in this genre I want them to be memorable and good, and i don't think that these are. Especially considering I find most of the "atmosphere" to just be gimmicky overproduction

Ok so I kinda loved this on second listen lol. Paid more attention to the lyrics and they’re really good. Curious where this will settle.

I've been too busy re-listening to the closer 40x so I haven't had much chance to give the album more spins lol.

I’m curious if she got a little inspiration for “Halloween” from The Maine’s song “Forever Halloween” both great albums!

"Too many of the songs’ flourishes are really just tricks of production rather than genuine songwriting ingenuity."
aren't good flourishes, tricks of production or not, just good flourishes? songwriting is one thing, but presentation is just as much a part of the process--it should be just as valuable as 'ingenuity', or that is at least how i see it
i feel like i may like this record better than stranger but unsure at the moment
happy to watch her ascent

also so many people talking about "weak melodies" as if there's actually a functioning litmus test on melody strength
obviously everybody hears what they like or dislike about a record, but objective language seems so petty and critical when it's still just a matter of preference
