Maybe Boney was right about his methodology with the new album:

Can’t tell if that lyrics in the closer is meaningless or great, but the delivery is certainly affecting either way.

And wow, good for him! One does wonder if American Heartbreak isn’t the (non-compilation) longest country album ever.

Diving in. Listening at work, so will be broken up by meetings, but don’t know a world where I can get the full 2 hours in anyway

Haha, yeah that's gonna be a common problem for people with this one.

I just got my double CD in the mail and started spinning it from track 1 all over again. The note on the inside sleeve is a nice touch and helps give some perspective to this thing's massive length:

Throughout the course of my life, I have tried so hard in everything I have ever done and I can say I’ve never put more into anything as I have this group of songs.

Falling out of love, falling into love, losing friendships, gaining friends, walking Jack around New York City at eight a.m, on my way to Electric Lady to record.

If you’d like to know the true state of humanity, watch the smile on peoples faces as an Oklahoman and a Labrador retriever named Jack Daniels walk by a bodega.

I decided to record American Heartbreak in New York because I didn’t want it to sound like anything else. At the risk of sounding pretentious, I don’t want a genre, I don’t want a scene, I don’t want a title.

I just want to make music. The respect I have for musicians in other genre’s and scene’s is insurmountable but, personally, I think the best outcomes come from the freedom of whatever a moment or song feels like on any given day.

The last five years of my life have been a true tall-tale, from the loss of my mother, deployments to countries far from home, failure, success, a national tour, sunrises in Seattle, sunsets in New York, smiles in Tulsa, fights in Philadelphia, coast-lines, close-calls, mountains, rivers, flatlands, valleys, loss, love, healing, hurting and forgiving.

I did my best to fit all of that into this collection of songs. My only ambitions in this life are to never bend to the thoughtless routines of this world, to always move slow enough to watch the sunrise, and to accept every single person for who they are, exactly where they stand, regardless if they return the favor.

God bless and God speed, I pray everyone finds something in American Heartbreak.

that’s amazing

what I’ve gathered from all the lyrics so far is it’s all personal but also relatable... like he wrote his own story in a way people could attach themselves to

Think new one will go unrated for me - Just listening to it, I'm not the most impressed, just because this style is bound to get homogenous over 34 tracks. I just don't think I'm ever going to sit down and listen to it with lyrics in hand, which is what I think it deserves

If any of y'all make a supercut of the album, I'd be interested

dmathias, here's a trimmed version of my already compressed album:

1. Something in the Orange (Z&E's version)

2. Heavy Eyes

3. Mine Again

4. The Outskirts

5. Cold Damn Vampires

6. She's Alright

7. Darling

8. The Good I'll Do

9. From Austin

10. Billy Stay

11. Corinthian's (Proctor's)

12. Some Day (Maggie's)

13. This Road I Know

Maybe when I have more time I can throw it in a Spotify playlist or something.

Edit: here you go! keep in mind it's just my favorites, not some measure of objectivity...

I think I’m in a similar boat to Mathias, there’s just too much else occupying my time for me to really invest in American Heartbreak. I’m glad I forced myself to get through it that one time I did because if I hadn’t done that on release weekend I probably would have never tried it at all.

It's way too samey the whole way through...and that's from someone who loves the new (slightly samey) Wilco double set

butt.

His new album is good, but yeah, 34 songs totaling up to 2 hours is straight up idiotic. Especially when all 34 songs are like 3-4 mins long and acoustic guitar driven. If he cut 20 songs it would be an easy 4, but seriously how can anyone think that was a good idea? Closer to a triple album than a double.

The variety is subtle but it's there, and the songcraft is consistently strong - just sat down and listened front-to-back without tiring of it. I get how it'd all be a bit much but for my tastes the new album is a huge achievement
